Hi, my name is Laurel Brenner (Guess) and in my life I have found it is a journey, and during the inevitable times when rocky waters toss us around, it helps to have a person in your life who has successfully navigated the rivers, and made it to the other side, where the waters are calm and smooth. I have always been the person people opened up to about what was bothering them. I was born to witness your journey. I am a professionally trained counselor and art therapist. I want to help you understand what has gotten you to this point in your life and determine where to go from there.

Life can be messy at times. We can get overwhelmed by everyday events, unexpected surprises-both good and not so good- and the expectations of others around us. In some cases, we're still dealing with the past and can't even begin to solve today's issues.

I work with individuals who want to better manage anger, stress, conflict, and the pressures of everyday life. Many of my clients are professionals, partners, and parents who feel successful in some areas but recognize their reactions, communication, or emotional patterns are impacting their relationships.
Some clients come on their own looking for personal growth, while others are referred by courts, attorneys, or employers. Through honest conversations, accountability, and practical tools, we focus on building self-awareness, improving communication, and creating healthier responses.

I use an integrative approach, utilizing techniques from psychoanalytic and psychodynamic therapy, parts work, Motivational Interviewing, somatic techniques, and some psychoanalytic frameworks to help clients recognize patterns, build resilience, and find a source of acceptance within the self.
I work with adults questioning their relationship with alcohol, a spiritual system that once felt supportive, or the direction of their life. This can create a feeling like for some that they don’t quite fit anywhere in the usual boxes. If this feel relevant for you, you may have outgrown something that once grounded you, and while things look “fine” on the outside, you feel stuck, disconnected, or unsure where life is headed. I work with those navigating in-between spaces where things don’t quite fit, even if they don’t fully understand it yet.

We can talk about death. Or your Meemaw’s banana bread. Or both.
I’m a therapist who can hold the heavy stuff without becoming heavy. I work with adults (especially Elder Millennials and those older) dealing with life transitions: empty nesters, retirement, job changes, role changes, brides-to-be, peripartum, terminal and chronic illness, grief, burnout, spiritual questions, relocations, trauma and many more transitional phases and seasons. I believe humor belongs in the room. You don’t have to choose between depth and warmth here. I’m not overly clinical. I’m not surface-level either. Maybe slightly Gordon Ramsay + Mother Teresa.

It’s natural to wonder if and how change is possible, especially when feeling confused, uncertain, and, oftentimes, alone. Chances are that you have already tried many things to help yourself and want to know how therapy can help you find what you are seeking.

I provide therapy services exclusively through secure online video sessions. Are you ready to really live your life and not merely exist? You have within yourself the power to overcome any difficulties. Many of our obstacles, environmental, past experiences, biological dysfunctions, and worries about the future rob us from fully living and enjoying our lives. And the way we view them might keep us stuck and unfulfilled. I can help you notice those external and/or internal factors, identify patterns of thought and behavior, help you neutralize them, and encourage positive change and growth.

I work with clients of all ages. With younger populations I specialize in childhood anxiety, depression, neglect/abuse, children of divorce, foster care, anger management, and aggressive behaviors. With adults I use client centered and solution focused approaches to address symptoms related to anxiety, depression, and adverse experiences including trauma. I am trained in TF-CBT (trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy) and EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and utilize those therapies with both children and adults. I look for behavioral and wholistic ways to improve functioning before suggesting medicinal interventions.

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
