Neurodiversity-affirming therapy goes beyond just using certain methods in sessions. While, of course, there are interventions tailored for neurodivergent folx. It's really about how therapists see their clients and their experiences. Instead of viewing neurodivergence as a problem to be fixed, this approach sees it as a natural part of how people are different from each other.
It's crucial to recognize that neurodivergence presents challenges and disabilities. Asserting that neurodivergence is solely a strength, without acknowledging any difficulties can lead to toxic positivity - dismissing the complete reality. A therapist affirming neurodiversity acknowledges that each client is the expert on their own journey and experience.
