Looking for a therapist can be challenging. For those looking for the first time, I'd like to offer some thoughts on finding one who's right for you. While credentials and experience have their place, at the end of the day the most important thing is fit. I encourage you to "go with your gut." Do a phone consult. Did they give you space to talk? Did you feel heard? Sometimes what we need is feeling supported by someone who "gets" us. Other times we grow from someone who is able to challenge us in just the right way.

I work towards supporting individual & collective liberation using anti oppressive frameworks in therapy & supervision. I collaboratively work with folks who are compelled towards greater self-understanding, freedom, autonomy, interdependence and wellbeing, humans who recognize their own agency in their healing processes. I engage with people in different intersections of their identities that impact their lived experiences. By deepening our insights around patterns, values, and narratives we hold about ourselves and the systems & relationships we inhabit, we move toward greater understanding and compassion for ourselves and others.

I bring a strengths-based perspective to counseling that emphasizes an understanding of the whole person within their cultural and relational contexts, seeking to support people to make meaningful insights during sessions. I invite curiosity and self-compassion during the work in order to help individuals to strengthen their experience of well-being, as they grow through both challenges and discoveries. My approach is to support individuals as they deepen their sense of personal meaning and purpose, collaborating on problem-solving, life-transitions and development of an increased sense of connection .

Mental health difficulties often arise in the context of an absence of close interpersonal relationships. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, and severe, persistent mental illness can be successfully treated through improvements in one’s capacity to develop and maintain adaptive, healthy interpersonal connections and engagement in meaningful and enjoyable activities. I have more than 36 years practicing clinical psychology. I retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs on May 31, 2022 and I'm now expanding my private practice. Flexible schedule. I'm available for both teletherapy and in-office session. Lots of free parking.

My goal is to help you live and act with integrity, increasing ability to respond - while maintaining compassion for the changes that take support, time & practice. My experience lends itself to those touched by abandonment, childhood traumas & addiction - be it those trying to recover from addictions themselves, or those affected by another's. I do not believe in 'fixing' people, but rather dismantling the myths of being broken. Experience shows that our greatest challenges are often unsprouted seeds to the most potent strengths. Our task is to usher that growth.

You may be coming to therapy because of a particular problem – perhaps anxiety, OCD, or depression, or, if you're seeking couples therapy, perhaps a stuck point in your relationship. As we address that challenge and it becomes more manageable, your perspective may widen, opening beyond “what DON’T I want” (the problem) to “what DO I want” (purpose, meaning, connection?). Whatever our focus, my aim is to form a warm, supportive relationship that centers your needs and goals. We’ll probably find some things to laugh about – life is absurd sometimes! We can figure it out together.

There are a lot of ways to practice therapy. One crucial aspect of any "good" therapy is that it helps you expand your curiosity and open-mindedness about yourself - who you have been, who you are, and who you would like to be. Towards this aim, I listen with a commitment to my own openness, mindful of our shared humanity. As a clinical social worker and psychoanalyst, I see folks with a range of concerns from diverse cultural backgrounds. I think contextually, knowing our social worlds are integral to who we are.

I believe deeply in the process of becoming a more full human for life. As a therapist I want to support that growth in you. There is no end to how much we can grow in our mental ( how much we can grow when stepping into our whole embodied self) health, , self awareness and self realization. The process starts right where we are now. I'm biracial and a LGBT ally . I understand the alienation that so many in our culture feel. I love how teens and young adults are creating new selves through very difficult times in society. I like adults and older adults re-imagining themselves, recovering from trauma .My ideal client is 13-80

Living with an LGBTQAIP and/or erotically diverse identity can often bring extra challenges along with experiences of resiliency and strength. As a queer-identified, polyamorous and gender fluid therapist, I value creating a safe space where multiple aspects of identity are welcome and opportunities for healing are abundant.

I like to work relationally, which means that we, together, work on whatever challenges present themselves for you at this time in your life. It is my belief that each of us holds the answers to our own life challenges within ourselves. Therapy can create a supportive framework that can help clear debris from life's path so that one can see one's path more clearly. Adult life is often connected to our history, and the culture/environments we grew up in. Therapy can be a place to understand the threads between past and present. I often work with folks who are becoming parents. This phase is complex and can stir the silt of our story.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Northampton?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
