Kim Murphy Friedman
Marriage & Family Therapist Intern, MS, IMF
I strongly believe that by seeking therapy, individuals are showing that hope exists for them, no matter the current level of frustration. I build on that hope, developing and repairing their relationship with self using an integrative approach. I also utilize a good dose of humor in the work. I facilitate the individual's capacity to understand why they are engaging in patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving even though it may not be serving them. This insight creates new patterns of interaction, moving from repetitive, ineffective ones to those that are reliable, productive and empowering. I use psychodynamic, CBT, mindfulness and attachment theory.
I work with adults, couples, families and adolescents. My background as a preschool teacher, nanny and professional actor and dancer infuses my work with clients from adolescence to mid-life. My background includes an internship at Valley Community Clinic for two years in their psychoanalytic approach.
I firmly believe that people are usually attempting to achieve a goal and are communicating in the best way they know. Sometimes this way, this strategy, isn't effective, although it may have helped you feel safe. I help you establish a new way while maintaining a feeling of safety.
