If you’re like me, you want to feel connected; connected to self, friends, family, significant others, work, and even fun. Though we want connection, at times life gets in the way, with anxiety, depression, avoidance, a good Netflix show, a bad Netflix show, and the perception of failure. Even the idea of vulnerability in relationship can send us running. I wish I could tell you that if you just do A, B, and C then the pain, fear, discomfort, conflict, and insecurities will all go away and you will have the rich, full, meaningful life that you deserve. Unfortunately, this isn’t the reality that we live in.
Although I can’t “fix” or get rid of the problems you face, with close to 20 years of working with adolescents and families, I believe we can change our relationship with these challenges from something to avoid to something we can explore, sit with, and move through.
This path consists of connecting with what’s important, making moves towards those values and learning ways to interact with our thoughts and feelings in a compassionate, curious, and flexible way.
