My practice is increasingly focused on working with dynamics of estrangement between family members. These estrangements include parents and adult children, as well as adult sibling estrangement. When families are young, children and parents often form very close, bonded, loving relationships. As children mature, and eventually leave home, families can wind up struggling to grow in order to continue satisfying relationships. Adult siblings also find maintaining loving relationships can be challenging. Working together in family therapy can help improve communication, address concerns and heal wounds and misunderstandings.
When family members contact me, I ask to speak with them individually or together depending on their preferences. After I understand their circumstances, I meet with them in pairs, individually, and with multiple family members. Our goal is to air differences and develop better understanding, communication and compassion between family members.
When family members hurt, I listen, learn and give feedback about what I see as the most helpful areas to place our attention in your family. As your difficulties resolve, we can develop increased understanding with accompanying closer relationships. I will support your growth as you process your new understandings of one another.
