I'm a "feelings doctor," so that looks a little different for everyone I see depending on factors like age, goals and - what will be healing. The adults I work with tend to be unofficial therapists in their own lives, and therefore need a place where their lives are our sole focus. The parents I see typically need a strategic space to better understand their child's psychology, to workshop intentional/regulated responses to challenges, and a safe haven from judgment. The kids/teens like to practice being their best/worst selves and to develop strategies for managing emotions with a patient adult, who isn't their parent.
When relevant, I diagnose conditions or provide differential-diagnoses that are typically not addressed at the annual physical (ADHD, Autism, Learning Disorders, Anxiety, etc.). In therapy, I use diagnoses to build insight into possible "why's" for the challenges we are seeing, as well as ideas for what will help.
Safety, transparency and clear expectations for growth are my primary goals. I want every session to end on a note of unconditional support when approaching a clear next step. I think therapy should be fun whenever possible, I don't scare or judge easily, and at the end of the day I want to support you/your family in determining what works best.
