H.E.L.P.'s managing owner and Chief Clinical Officer is Dr. Karen McCurtis Witherspoon, a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Illinois who has thousands of clinical hours performing assessments with children and adults for the past decade. Her clinical practice focuses on psychological testing, parenting evaluations, and psychotherapy with children, adolescents, and adults. The H.E.L.P. LLC consulting team is a multidisciplinary one: there are psychologists, clinical counselors, substance abuse counselors, social workers, educators and a naturopath on the team. Appointments are available in the Hyde Park Office in Chicago, or the suburban office in South Holland, IL.
The qualifications we bring not only include advanced degrees and specific training, but a commitment to working with an underserved population. Our developmental approach to assessment and therapy is solution-focused and client-centered. A combination of evidence-based individual, group, testing, and support services can be provided accomplish your goals.
Dr. Witherspoon is also a tenured professor, published author and grant writer whose previous research was funded through a National Institute of Mental Health grant to study the role of oppression in the psychological functioning of African Americans. We offer culturally specific and responsive interventions.

Stress is an unavoidable aspect of life that can have a negative impact on one's physical and mental health if not managed. Gaining Insight for Trying Times (G.I.F.T.) is an eight week support group that helps members learn how to identify stress triggers, its negative effects, and acquire coping tools for effective stress management. A focus on mind-body approaches are taught in order to relieve pain, manage anxiety, cope with illness, increase productivity, and improve overall sense of well-being.

P.R.I.D.E. Teenager Group

The purpose of the 6 session Promoting Resiliency and Identity Development through Empowerment (PRIDE) curriculum is to promote racial identity, collective self-esteem and resilience among adolescent girls and boys in order to protect them against the harmful implications associated with media stereotypes, including the stereotype that Black students can't master standardized testing. Pychoeducational activities bolster effective coping, problem solving and learning strategies.
