The word “support” might call to mind images of braces, splints, tracks, or advice— all things that try to force a certain form. What I mean by “support” looks less like applied pressure and more like a gentle holding up so that another human soul may unfurl in their own time and take whatever shape would be in alignment with their natural way. Support means to protect, attend to, witness, and reflect back the worth in every process— and when appropriate, to collaborate and name their experience of psychic expansion through words or images.
Non-traditional therapeutic work is less about identifying dysfunction and carrying the burden of pathology and more about entering a space that is ripe with support, experiential and working knowledge, as well as collaborative, compassionate, existential work.
Kara Morrissey is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Board Certified Art Therapist, certified in Brainspotting, and a graduate of The University of Georgia and Florida State University who specializes in working with clients who have received multiple levels of treatment, high risk behavior, clients coping with critical incidents, grief, and substance abuse.
