The Diathesis-Stress model of psychology suggests, GENETICS load the gun and the ENVIRONMENT pulls the trigger. As human beings, we are all biologically vulnerable to experience mental health disorders, although they may manifest in different ways and to different levels of severity. At the same time we are all exposed to environmental stressors that can interact with our predispositions. With any therapist, it is important to develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely) goals that allow us to gain insight into our vulnerabilities and surroundings, to better understand why we react the way that we do.
As a SYSTEMS therapist, the goal is to first understand that we do not operate in a vacuum, and that we are constantly bombarded with environmental messages that sometimes result in problems with mood, anxiety, self-esteem, etc. The insight gained from exploring these environmental triggers can be used to CHANGE how we react in future situations.
There are many models of psychological treatment that have all been proven effective through research. Before you agree to treatment, it is important to understand your treatment provider's modality to determine whether it is a good fit for your needs. I invite you to set up a consultation to learn more about the SYSTEMS approach to see if it can help.
