“The tyranny of deterioration / It worries me that it’s all just a waste of time / Taking one step forward and two steps backwards.” These words, written by Dustin Kensrue of the band Thrice, relate to so many of us today: we’re worried, we’re exhausted, we feel like we’re getting nowhere. Fortunately, Kensrue doesn’t stop the words there, and neither do I: “Still I believe there’s a thread through the thorns / And I believe that somewhere it’s warm / And I believe that it’s ever bright beyond this black.”
Whatever brings you to therapy – the tyranny of deterioration, worry, moving forwards & backwards – you’re not alone, and you’re welcome here. Therapy, to me, is about the human connection, about joining together to find a thread through the thorns, the bright beyond the black. We’ll talk, we’ll process, we’ll learn skills, we’ll sit in silence, we’ll laugh.
“Will the morning come? / For all I know we’ll never see the sun / But together we’ll fight the long defeat.” The journey takes time. The healing takes time. I can’t promise perfection. But I can promise that together we’ll fight the long defeat. We’ll change what we can, accept what we can’t, and make meaning through it all.
