No one chooses to struggle. We don’t decide to get depressed or anxious. Difficulties in close relationships aren’t wished for. Low self-esteem isn’t a preference. We come about these struggles honestly, often from legacies of trauma or adversity, or more subtle, but still difficult developmental contexts. Often, it’s the skillful adaptation to these less-than-ideal contexts that causes us the most struggle. Anxious hypervigilance and mistrust are protective in dangerous contexts. Avoiding our emotions and avoiding seeking support are protective when others reject our bids for care. And, yet, unlearning what protected us is hard.
A student of attachment theory, I have long believed what research is increasingly underlining: our mental and physical wellbeing is highly dependent on the quality of our relationships with ourselves and others. I have worked with people with a variety of problems using this lens, often starting with the therapeutic relationship as a source of healing.
It’s hard to start therapy; too many people endure difficult symptoms because of this. It’s easy to doubt a therapist will understand you and your story, easy to feel yet another person will not be helpful. I honor the vulnerability involved in starting and staying in therapy by staying with my empathy, compassion, and respect. I invite you to reach out.
