Most people don't know how to handle conflict in important relationships. And why would you or your partner? The couples I work with often wonder why they keep having the same fights, or why they and/or their partner keep getting triggered, or why it can be so hard to understand one another. And, sometimes, one or both partners wonder what happened to their sex life and what can they do about it.
I use emotionally-focused therapy to get to what's underneath the fighting - why it makes sense but how to have different conversations that will lead to better results and stronger relationships.
I start with a belief that we are all (or almost all) wired to want to be in a close relationship. And, we don't all have the same idea of how close we want to be and what that should look like or how to talk about it. I help couples to have the conversations they haven't been able to have and to understand themselves and each other better.
Unfortunately, nobody teaches most of us how to be in a healthy relationship, especially when things are challenging. I am an active therapist and believe in helping partners to avoid having the same fights in therapy that they have at home. We slow things down and look at why each partner might not feel heard or understood by their partner.
