All human beings have within themselves the capacity for living happy, meaningful lives. We are meant to thrive, however it is quite common for distressing life experiences to interfere with our natural way of being. Sometimes obstacles are known to us, but have been resistant to change. Others remain hidden, but what we do notice clearly are psychological and emotional symptoms of distress (depression, fear and anxiety, emotional reactivity, irritability, addictions, etc.). These symptoms can significantly impact our quality of life, and almost always cause problems in relationships.
In a healthy interaction with a therapist, obstacles can be be newly understood and worked through in a process that is cautious, carefully paced, and above all else, safe. In doing so, longstanding ways of thinking, feeling and acting can shift, opening up possibilities where none seemed to exist before.
My work has a strong mindfulness component, and I have significant experience treating adults who were traumatized as children. My clients often report that they have gained more insight into their lives, that they feel more at home within themselves and more capable of handling life's inner and outer difficulties as they inevitably arise.
