Have you ever tried to talk about something difficult that is going on with your child and it feels like they don’t want to verbally address it? Do you often get one word answers when asking them about things as simple as their day at school? From my experience, it often feels too direct and intimidating for children to answer these things verbally. They also may not have the skills to talk about topics with emotion attached to them yet. For this reason, I believe in the use of play to help a child communicate complicated feelings as a child’s language is play.
I believe in creating a child led space centered around play to build a relationship and rapport with your child first. I then use sand tray therapy to allow the child to communicate whatever feelings they may be having.
I believe children know a lot more than we give them credit for and just need some help communicating it, so they do not need to act it out in the form of difficult behaviors. I specialize in working with children 3-12 with trauma, or any big emotions that you feel they may need to talk through (anxiety, depression, anger, etc…)
