For 35 years, I've practiced in Baltimore specializing in treating Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Depression. Ten years ago, I added meditation--a powerful tool in self regulation-- into my otherwise traditional practice. More meditation can mean less medication if you can learn to regulate yourself. While medication can be an invaluable tool, I am of the opinion that there is a trend in our field to over-medicate, and less is often more.

I treat all forms of bipolar disorder, with a particular interest in hypomania, a mildly manic temperament often found in creative successful people. Gaining self-control while not losing your creative spark is the key, as I describe in my book, The Hypomanic Edge: The Link Between (a Little) Craziness and (a lot of) Success in America

BPD is very treatable, but it's important to see a specialist. For 28 years I taught treatment of BPD to psychiatric residents at Johns Hopkins, after training at Cornell with Otto Kernberg, whose work helped define the disorder. Since then I have integrated many aspects of DBT, especially meditation.
