I offer psychotherapy for men and women seeking relief from emotional suffering, experiences of disconnection, or untenable situations in their lives and relationships. I am committed to building an energetic and collaborative therapeutic relationship that can help you better understand your motivations and needs, and experience a more authentic and vital connection with yourself and others. I regard symptoms, whether related to anxiety, depression, compulsive behaviors, low self-esteem, or unsatisfying patterns in your relationships, as opportunities for growth when approached with curiosity, compassion, and respect.

I have specialized training in the treatment of difficulties related to eating and embodiment. I am a supervisor and teaching faculty at the Women's Therapy Centre Institute and adjunct faculty at the Hunter College School of Social Work. I have completed post-graduate training at the Mitchell Center for Relational Studies.

I practice from a contemporary psychodynamic orientation and with attention to the ways our social experiences inform our psychological development. I am actively engaged in sessions and will bring my full attention and emotional presence to our conversations. I believe in a collaborative approach to treatment that is based on respect and openness.

Joanne Messina's Groups

Body Image and Eating Issues Group

This ongoing psychotherapy group draws upon an anti-diet, intuitive eating perspective to help women heal their relationship with food, and understand the meaning of their eating behaviors and feelings about their bodies. Members are helped to be mindful in their eating experiences and to connect to their bodies for guidance about how to feed themselves. This group is grounded in an awareness of the social pressures that encourage women to live in disharmony with their bodies, and in response supports members to stand against the grain of culturally sanctioned hypervigilance about food and body, and the self-contempt that typically accompanies these practices.
