"Not until we are lost, do we begin to understand ourselves." -- Henry David Thoreau. I believe this statement is an essential truth about the human condition. Paradoxically, as other great intellects have attested to, it is precisely through self-understanding that one achieves emotional healing, wisdom and maturity. Through insight and self-awareness, one also gains an increased capacity for deep and meaningful relationships, a potent tonic for whatever ails, be it depression or anxiety, grief or trauma, aging or illness.... Resolving inner conflicts leads to healthier choices and the vanquishing of self-defeating patterns.
The question then becomes how to achieve self-understanding. Self-reflection is requisite, but not nearly enough. The reason harkens back to another brilliant thinker, Sigmund Freud, who more than a century ago discovered the unconscious. We cannot understand what we cannot be aware of, and this is where a skilled psychotherapist comes into play.
I have 31 years experience working in private practice with adult individuals and couples. I have a master's degree in marriage and family therapy, a doctorate in psychoanalysis and a fellowship in the IPA. I also treat, teach and supervise other therapists. I am warm, empathic and responsive. As Thoreau also wrote, "Things do not change. We change."
