Especially for some of the most successful among us, we can hold ourselves to the highest standards of performance in all areas. Sometimes we may feel that we're supposed to have all the answers to the challenges life throws our way, even when that isn’t always possible. An achievement focus can come at the expense of other areas of our lives. I see therapy as a collaborative experience. I work with individuals and couples to help unlock what holds them back to gain an understanding of how our histories shape our present, while building a foundation of skills in the here-in-now to promote healing and a future that is self-defined.

There are many ways that we as human beings suffer and try to cope. Layers of personal, familial, and historical trauma contribute to problematic relationship patterns, bodily pain and illness, over- or under-working, and obsessions. But these symptoms that are a source of suffering are often also expressing things that can't be expressed otherwise or pointing to aspects of living that need more care. I help my clients use words to explore these parts of self and to have new experiences, in order to make room for a life of more fullness, love, meaning, creativity, and ease.

Are you living the life you want? Is your relationship a source of pain for you? Are you arguing more, trusting less, or finding yourself not looking forward to spending time together? Maybe your relationship feels stuck, like you're just replaying the same disagreement over and over again. Do you not like the person you are when you're in a relationship or wonder why you keep repeating patterns in the type of person you date? Human beings are wired for connection, yet somehow the people we are closest with also seem to cause us the most pain.

How do we know when we're healed, "fixed", back to ourselves? There's a lightening up, a kinder voice in our heads, a bursting generosity and restored sense of purpose. And how does one get there with an integrative therapist? We start with The Here and Now. Forming I Fear/ I Wish statements. Figuring out which Selves survived that little t or Big T trauma. Listing the constricting beliefs of your Inner Critic. Inviting you (and your partner?) to play with new self-talk, role-play, power poses or traditions. Maybe diagramming intergenerational intel to re-write the future.

If you’re looking for help, there is a good chance that you've felt overwhelmed by your thoughts and feelings, or felt lost in your relationships or life itself. I collaborate with each individual and couple, helping them feel understood and seen, rather than jumping to any quick-fix solutions. Using principles and skills drawn from both skills based and compassion focused approaches, I strive to help clients learn more about their underlying values, sense of self, and patterns that have played out in their lives. Through this process, we work collaboratively to develop the skills and insight to move towards fulfillment and purpose.

Are you wondering if your drug or alcohol use is becoming a problem? Do you know it is a problem, but cannot seem to control it? Maybe you engage in a different sort of self-sabotaging behavior, such as binge-eating, compulsive spending or undermining your success at work. Self-sabotaging behaviors, including drug and alcohol misuse, are actions we choose but they feel automatic and inescapable. Often, they serve to maintain status quos, prevent growth, and imprison us in unhappy situations. I understand the pain and hopelessness that comes from repeating the same mistakes. It is never too late to change a limiting pattern.

Therapy can be challenging, especially starting, whether it's your first time or you are looking for a new therapist. By providing a safe space for you to open up, we will explore your goals and obstacles to them. I will listen, and I will be honest, helping you on this journey called life. Maybe you are looking for help with relationships, or with anxiety, with career, or ADHD, or maybe a life transition. These are only some of the issues I work with.

Jewish Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same background to be able to work together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of cultural forces, such as discrimination, that may contribute to that client’s concerns. With a professional who has such training, a client should feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues without feeling that they need to self-censor.

How can I recognize an effective Jewish therapist?

As with members of any religious or ethnic group, just because two people happen to be Jewish does not guarantee that they will share the same values, knowledge, or experiences. A Jewish client seeking a therapist who shares their cultural identity, or for whom it’s important that a therapist share their religious beliefs, may want to discuss a professional’s Jewish background with them before beginning therapy. For someone who seeks justification for major life changes in their religious tradition, or in biblical writings, finding a therapist who is comfortable framing guidance in that context may be especially valuable.

Would a Jewish therapist have unique training?

No, but they should have the same training and certification as any other mental health professional, as well as experience with a range of evidence-based techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or mindfulness-based therapy. A therapist with this type of experience should be able to help any client feel comfortable and safe, which is essential for a therapeutic alliance. Once this is established, a potential client may want to find out more about the therapist’s Jewish background.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with Jewish clients?

A client can directly ask a therapist if they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and if so, whether these individuals sought counseling for faith-related issues or marital or familial issues in which their Jewish background was a factor. A client may also wish to ask a potential therapist whether they incorporate Jewish teachings and values into their own professional work.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Jewish therapists?

The directory of Jewish therapists includes professionals who have opted to share their cultural background on their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their background, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and/or communities.
