I am dedicated to partnering with people who want more: more peace, more meaning, more love, more depth, more space, more insight, or more of you're-not-quite-sure-yet. We might be a great fit if you consider yourself a highly sensitive person (HSP), want to work through disordered eating or body image issues using a Health at Every Size (HAES) and Intuitive Eating approach, are an early career therapist or other helping professional wanting to build out a sustainable professional foundation for yourself and avoid or heal burnout, or know you benefit from working with a therapist operating from an anti-oppressive lens.

Do you struggle to get your needs met in your relationships? Perhaps you try repeatedly and fail to achieve harmony? I have a special interest in working with individuals experiencing unhappiness in their important relationships. When my clients first come in, they may feel they are doing the heavy lifting and hope that things will change. Their relationship dissatisfaction gets in the way of the life they want in so many ways. They aren’t the person they strive to be according to their values. They feel like they are failing as a partner and in life. Greater self-confidence and fulfillment are attainable.

You have BIG feelings and always have. You are sensitive to your environment, tuned into the subtle nuances and energies of the people/world around you. You feel it in your gut. You sense it in your body. You were bullied, shamed, or invalidated for these feelings growing up – told you were too sensitive. You learned to doubt, squash, numb, or project those feelings onto other people and things as a way to stay safe in a world that doesn't have time for such things. You people-please, overwork, over-think, detach. You run from your feelings until they suddenly consume you. Disconnect or engulfed. You crave harmony inside and out.

My approach to therapy is rooted in the view that we are all, at the deepest level, whole and complete; we all have wisdom, love, compassion, and the capacity for connection within us. My job as a therapist is not to fix or to change anyone—it is to help and support you in connecting with your own knowing, power, and ability to grow and meet your goals. I work with adults and older teens seeking assistance with a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, life transitions, and identity development and change.

Being a human is hard sometimes. Life throws all sorts of challenges your way, and it can be difficult to manage things on your own. You may feel disconnected from support systems, or in need of a safe space to express yourself. Hopefully therapy can be a place to process, heal, build upon your strengths, and help get to a place where life feels back on track. I have experience supporting clients with ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, Autism Spectrum disorder, self-exploration, self-esteem, relationship issues and other life stressors. I also have experience working with individuals from various cultural backgrounds.

I work with individuals and couples, as well as children, in both DC and Chapel Hill. I do best with adults who are educated or reflective: many are scientists, artists, health and business professionals, or psychotherapists, and some are not pursuing conventional achievement. Some see me for family or work problems, some for help dealing with a chronic health issue or a loss, some to change longstanding emotional and interpersonal patterns involving anxiety, anger, or intimacy. We may try quick and simple approaches first, because sometimes they work, but if not we can go more deeply into the individual's unique personal narrative.

I’m a lifelong questioner, and an evolving transgressor of privilege and norms in service of collective liberation. I could be a great fit if you're similarly situated and you're trying to uncover, create or follow paths to new insights and behaviors for yourself and the important relationships that animate your community. I can offer a gentle presence as an active listener in a reliably curious, compassionate, and courageous environment. Sessions with me mostly feature verbal communication directly about therapeutic concerns, but may also involve creative-expressive, somatic or mindfulness practices.

It can be both rewarding and vulnerable to begin or continue therapy: I create a warm, non-judgmental space for reworking old patterns that may not serve you anymore. Life experiences, environment, circumstances, and cultural systems of power all shape our understanding of ourselves, of others, and of the world around us. Together we can explore what matters to you most, where you may feel stuck and how you can find more ease. To inform our work, I primarily draw on your history and relational experiences, your own body’s feedback, information from contemporary neuroscience, and our in-session interactions.

Jewish Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same background to be able to work together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of cultural forces, such as discrimination, that may contribute to that client’s concerns. With a professional who has such training, a client should feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues without feeling that they need to self-censor.

How can I recognize an effective Jewish therapist?

As with members of any religious or ethnic group, just because two people happen to be Jewish does not guarantee that they will share the same values, knowledge, or experiences. A Jewish client seeking a therapist who shares their cultural identity, or for whom it’s important that a therapist share their religious beliefs, may want to discuss a professional’s Jewish background with them before beginning therapy. For someone who seeks justification for major life changes in their religious tradition, or in biblical writings, finding a therapist who is comfortable framing guidance in that context may be especially valuable.

Would a Jewish therapist have unique training?

No, but they should have the same training and certification as any other mental health professional, as well as experience with a range of evidence-based techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or mindfulness-based therapy. A therapist with this type of experience should be able to help any client feel comfortable and safe, which is essential for a therapeutic alliance. Once this is established, a potential client may want to find out more about the therapist’s Jewish background.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with Jewish clients?

A client can directly ask a therapist if they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and if so, whether these individuals sought counseling for faith-related issues or marital or familial issues in which their Jewish background was a factor. A client may also wish to ask a potential therapist whether they incorporate Jewish teachings and values into their own professional work.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Jewish therapists?

The directory of Jewish therapists includes professionals who have opted to share their cultural background on their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their background, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and/or communities.
