The guiding philosophy of my practice is to help people understand themselves in the service of personal development within the context of a safe and reliable relationship with another person. I believe that deep and rich self-examination requires rigorous and systematic pursuit on the part of both therapist and patient as they work together. I place a high value on curiosity, creativity, purposeful aims, tolerance of discomfort, and the strength for meaningful work and satisfying relationships. The aims are more personal freedom and authenticity, a coming alive in oneself, becoming more human. This is even more important than ever.
Such aims cannot be attained in a vacuum, without the presence of another human being or through computer generated interactions, but rather are experienced or learned through the medium of the uniquely human psychotherapeutic relationship. Therapist and patient together endeavor to register and express the patient’s inner experience, feelings, and thoughts.
Patients are asked to say everything that occurs to them. No thought, feeling, or fantasy is to be censored or judged. Things felt, said, dreamed, unsaid and unknown take shape. The patient becomes known to self and others. The past is discovered in the present. Awareness leads to insight, and insight leads to change.
