I have been in practice for the last 21 years. I see primarily adult individuals (that is persons 17 years or older). Trauma and PTSD represent the major focus of my practice. Trauma is a dysregulation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Such dysregulation is represented by the diagnoses of PTSD, Acute Stress Disorder, Depression and Anxiety among other disorders.
Trauma is literally an injury to the brain resulting in an overactive sympathetic nervous system. This causes individuals to interact with the environment in ways which are related to past events. In so responding, the individual's parasympathetic nervous system, that is the thinking side of the brain, is reduced or even shut down.
