I am often contacted by clients unable to derive pleasure from their daily lives. At times, these problems are clearly linked to anxiety, depression, or to inner conflicts. However, at other times, clients are not able to point to specific symptoms, but rather are troubled by a vague sense of dissatisfaction that complicates relationships, work life, or their ability to be successful in school or in other pursuits. Previous attempts to solve these problems through the use of medications or by focusing on behavior or cognitions have proven less than satisfactory, and have led to an interest in trying insight-oriented psychotherapy.
My training and background are in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, and I hold an MSSW and PhD in clinical social work. I taught 37 years, and am distinguished professor emeritus at Wayne State University. I am founding editor of Psychoanalytic Social Work, and have published 16 books. I've led clinical workshops in the US, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific Rim.
As a clinician with 45 years experience, I believe I can be of help to you, even if other clinical approaches or medications have failed to offer you relief from pain or distress. I am a careful listener, deeply interested in hearing your story and in collaborating with you to achieve enduring insights and relief from inner pain and conflict.
