As a licensed psychologist I have two initial goals: 1) To provide a safe, supportive environment. 2) To build a good, trusting relationship with my clients. Building a safe, trusting relationship allows me to collaborate with clients to help them feel better and make positive changes. I specialize in treating people who have a history of sexual and/or physical abuse, neglect, and sexual assault. In addition, I help people struggling with depression, low self esteem, anxiety, anger, relationship and family problems.
Because trauma and other difficult life events are felt not only in the mind but the body, I utilize a variety of techniques to help people heal from symptoms that may wreak havoc on their bodies such as intense anxiety, feeling shut down or numb, or experiencing intense anger. These approaches include EMDR and Internal Family Systems therapy (see website).
It is important to me to understand all the factors that shape my clients lives and so I use a framework that takes into consideration how things like culture, race (including racial trauma), ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity shape the inner lives of my clients as well as their relationships with others and their communities.
