My belief is that patients are always the experts on themselves, and they may simply need a compassionate, neutral party to help them know and better understand what they want, think, and feel. I listen and pay attention to what is said and what is not said. Because people excel at doing what they are used to doing, change can be difficult. Having someone guide them along the way can increase one’s capacity for and likelihood of success.
I have been trained in trauma-informed care and customize therapy to each patient. I utilize different methodologies, including talk therapy, somatic approaches, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems. I conceptualize each client using the bio-psycho-social model which helps me and my clients better understand what has affected their current issues.
Coming to counseling can be an extremely daunting experience. We may not be sure what we want to discuss, be afraid that our problems or concerns are not valid or “big enough,” worry that our issues are beyond fixing, or be concerned about what others think of us. I work to create a safe, judgment-free space in order to facilitate better mental health.
