After working with adults for over twenty-five years in the fields of addictions and therapy, I’ve learned that you and I are a lot alike: we want to feel good and not feel pain; we want to be able to breathe easier and not feel troubled. Our work will involve exploring habitual patterns and looking at obstacles that have obscured the answers to your questions; we will work patiently, diligently, creatively and with humor to become more aware of them. We will work to mindfully loosen the grip of those obstacles, bit by bit, while exploring alternatives and options.
Addictions are often considered a “family disease” not only because they can be traced back through generations, but also because, on a more observable level, every member of the immediate family plus friends and acquaintances are affected. The warning signs can be very subtle and unknowingly affect many other people.
Individual responsibility is required if the increasingly painful effects of addiction are to be arrested, not just tolerated.
