With compassion, an open heart, & inclusivity, Amy helps people expand their potential by creating a personal roadmap to their emotional health & wellbeing. Listening, acknowledgement, & building trust are key ingredients to her approach. Amy tunes into the client in each moment of every session to understand what they are experiencing to help them get their needs met. Attachment wounding can be a part of many people's childhoods and those experiences often present now. Many times, reparenting occurs through the therapy process and results in a corrective experience, bringing peacefulness & healing...to feel whole again.

If you are feeling anxious, or struggling to know and express how you feel, therapy is a great place to start. It can be hard to trust yourself, and believe you are worthy. You may feel guilty speaking up for yourself or taking time for self care. It can be hard to feel better on your own. Your challenges can't be solved by doing the same things you've always done. I believe everyone is their own best healer, but it can be hard without support. I can help you discover why you feel the way you do, help you believe you are worth committing to change, and find practical ways to feel better and move forward in your life.

I started my business with one thing in mind: How to help others find what took me a long time to find for myself, joy. I’ve worked in behavioral health for nearly 30 years. In that time I’ve learned that the only barriers to my joy are the ones I created for myself. Being mindful, I worked toward healthier habbits and setting boundaries. I hope to share my skills and experience with my clients to help them achieve their own success.

I have worked with children, adolescents, adults and families for over 30 years. The decision to enter counseling is often a difficult one, but the rewards from a positive and productive experience are abundant. There are challenges at every stage of life that are difficult to manage without support and good information. My goal is to help every client discover what will work best for their situation in the most efficient and respectful process possible. All of us function best when we know what we want and manage our behavior to reach those goals. Good therapy is worth the investment.

It is a brave step to seek out therapy. Together we will create a safe and curious space to explore what led you here and the way it may be impacting your life and relationships. We all carry pain, grief, shame, anxiety and fears; we will work together to understand these and move toward healing and growth. I recognize that we as humans are not raised in isolation, but our families and systems around us impact how we experience life and function in the world. We will aim to discover the “whys” behind the feelings and reactions and move away from judgment toward self-compassion as you navigate the ups and downs of life.

Welcome! I'm so glad you're here. As humans, we all struggle with coping sometimes. Coping could be more challenging because of chronic illness, pain, neurodiversity, anxiety, and depression. My fellow zebras may be familiar with the saying coined by Theodore Woodward, “When you hear hoofbeats, think of horses, not zebras,” which is commonly taught to doctors. This saying often results in individuals feeling invalidated and questioning their symptoms. Invalidation and lack of support can leave individuals feeling isolated. As a therapist, I aim to assist my clients with building coping mechanisms and providing emotional support.

Life comes with joy and pain, love and anger, accomplishments and mess-ups, and sometimes confusion. The times when we struggle and feel stuck or confused as individuals, as couples & as parents are often signals that it’s time to grow. I work collaboratively with my clients and have great success utilizing techniques from Internal Family Systems (IFS) as well as Narrative and Psychodynamic therapy to treat trauma, anxiety, panic, depression, grief and eating disorders. I also work with individuals, couples and families facing every day parenting, life and relationship challenges.

It is my goal as a counselor to create a safe space for self-reflection, exploration and compassion. It is my belief that through therapeutic collaboration, anyone is able to heal and grow. I approach counseling through a holistic and trauma-informed lens. Being a social worker means considering every aspect of an individual’s life and how those factors contribute to their mental health.

My preferred approach is a person-centered, strengths based approach that emphasizes a partnership between the client and therapist. Depending on the needs of each individual, I draw from cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy, and problem solving therapy. I enjoy being able to provide support and helping individuals learn coping skills that will help them throughout their lives. I enjoy working with a variety of populations and attending training classes and conferences to better support those populations, including the LGBTQ+ community.

Often when someone experiences trauma or severe life stressors, their life begins to unravel. I meet you where you are. The places in you that are lost and hurt and find a gentle supportive way to guide you and help you return to your core. To regain balance in your life. This is the work I have done since 2005 with the Native American Community. I help those who are deeply traumatized, by events in their life, those who have suffered abuse, neglect and grief.

Healing starts when empathy is offered first to your own journey and then to the world around you. It would be my privilege to support you throughout your journey towards healing, uncovering a deeper comprehension of yourself, and the world around you. As a therapist I work alongside each of my clients by examining your lived experience and perspective to better understand how you comprehend and move through reality. It is through exploring our lived experiences and perceptions that we can become more aware how we operate, respond, and live in this world and can facilitate healing for ourselves and in our relationships.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Kirkland?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
