I have been working in mental health since 2015. During that time, I have worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings. I have a keen therapeutic focus on helping people to make sense of not only their past but their present and how small pivots can help build future growth. I have extensive experience in working with trauma, anxiety, depression, couples, and other mental health issues. These experiences have cultivated in me a passion for helping people take their next step, however small it may seem.

You deserve to genuinely enjoy life. Maybe you feel overwhelmed because you are caring for others before you care for yourself. Maybe you are tired from being weighed down by emotional pain like trauma, grief, depression, or anxiety. Whatever brought you here, we can work together to find a way through.

You are the expert of your life and your family. My goal is to create a non-judgmental, therapeutic space for us to work together to explore any doubts, overwhelming feelings, or past experiences that are affecting the present. Whatever you are going through, you do not have to feel alone. I would love to be invited into your world as a partner in working through this time together. I enjoy working with people of all ages and have a special interest in working with children, those transitioning into parenthood, or finding parenting harder than they expected.

I believe that helpful therapy unfolds in an environment that is comfortable, empowering, safe, and one that allows for full expression. It is also important that the person I am working with can sense that I am listening attentively as they share the various layers of their experience. Individuals often seek help because they are unsettled or upset by what they are feeling. I aim to help clients "hold" their current experience without becoming overwhelmed, and eventually, to use those feelings as valuable information as we move through the therapeutic process.

In this day and age, it may be difficult to feel seen, heard, validated and appreciated. You may feel like there is no one around to discuss your thoughts and feelings with, or that doing so may burden them. We try to go it alone, but sometimes it just takes a bit of support and a listening ear to process stress and to release it. If you are going through marital or relationship stress, family or friend difficulties, you are struggling with grief, low self-esteem, or are experiencing trauma, such as, sexual assault or domestic violence, you are safe here.

As a therapist, I like to be collaborative with clients and pull from multiple modalities in order to meet them where they are at. This way we tend to have a path to go down, with strategies to try. Some of my specialties are working with Young Adults, and Adults going through life transitions (graduation, new job, moving, divorce, etc.), processing grief and loss, and addressing anxiety or depression. Showing people compassion during these times, and helping them to find the space to grow has been a big part of my practice.

I have experience working with anxiety, depression, trauma, personality disorders, phobias, grief, and issues related to couples and relationships.

Everyone deserves to have a good day and a better tomorrow. I realize that taking on a personal change out of desire or necessity is often harder than it sounds. I work with all ages, life-stages, and conditions. People arrive with their bag of “stuff”: hopes, disappointments, wounds, trauma, diagnoses, and connections. I start where you are and work with you to create a path to a place of well-being.

Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here. Brene Brown once said, “Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never weakness”. Our experiences in life can sometimes leave us feeling sad, angry, confused, lost, and everything in between. Whether you’re struggling with experiences of trauma, depression, anxiety, loss, any relational conflicts, or school difficulties, I’m here to walk alongside you on a path towards vulnerability and compassion for all parts of you. Instead of being who you’ve had to be (because trauma), this journey can bring you to who you’re meant to be.

I designed my website, howarderman.com, for people considering psychotherapy and I think my mini-essay, Thoughts on How to Choose a Therapist, will help you even if you end up working with someone else. My own style is relaxed, engaged, sensitive and thoughtful as we explore current problems and underlying issues. I believe if our self-understanding is limited, we keep defeating ourselves in our actions, like being stuck in a hole and trying to dig our way out when that is the only action certain to get us in even deeper. With insight, support, and hard work, change begins.

Healing begins when we talk about the pain - I believe one of the largest obstacles to feeling better is asking for help. I also believe that each of us is resilient and has an inner strength that enables us to soldier on while we work through our pain. My goal as your therapist will be to support you and give you the tools you need, while guiding you through the process of healing and resolution so that you may find inner peace and renewed energy.

“If anyone knew my true financial situation, they would be appalled." “It feels like I’m in a pit that I can’t climb out of.” “Budgets don't work for me.” Have you ever said or thought these things to yourself? I have. I’ve been where you are. My journey to become a Licensed Professional Counselor began as a result of my own money story. I specialize in Financial Therapy, a process that helps people think, feel, communicate, and behave differently with money. I began my journey as a financial coach. Instead of coaching people with budget blunders, I discovered that disorganized finances cause deep emotional pain.

How can I find a therapist in Ann Arbor?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
