I work with individuals and couples who are trying to understand both their inner psychological issues and their responses to complex and stressful outer lives. I listen for the strengths each person has for meeting challenges, and listen also for the ways clients create losses for themselves. Within a warm, caring, reliable working relationship clients have the opportunity to more deeply value themselves and to grow interpersonally.
In my practice the therapeutic relationship is a collaborative one: the conversations for both client and therapist are meaningful, honest, deep and often humorous. Psychotherapy can last many years, can be returned to at different times, or can, because of financial reality, mobility, or well-defined goals be briefer in length.
As an English major and performing artist earlier in life, I find that I listen for the language, images and emotional themes that reflect the unique personality and history of each client.
