I work with individuals and couples who are struggling. Though each struggle is unique, I operate from the standpoint that pain is universal. For the person that struggles to fully understand and express what they're feeling, for the teenager or young adult who struggles operating within the world they are inheriting, or for the couple that struggles to build or maintain friendship, love, or affection, recognizing and embracing those struggles are the first steps towards overcoming them. I work with those who want to feel more like themselves, and those who want to begin embodying the selves they aspire to be.

I understand it takes a tremendous amount of courage to reach out for support. I work with college students, young professionals and adults who are seeking relief from difficulties such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or the impacts of trauma. My professional interests also include identity development and emerging adulthood, relationship concerns, grief and loss, and coping with adjustments and transitions. In therapy, I help you develop self-compassion and personal insight so you can let go of shame and fear, and start building a life worth living.

Most of my clients are insightful, high achieving young adults who excel in their academic/professional lives, but struggle in their personal lives. They often come to me seeking strategies to overcome anxiety and stress, harsh critical thoughts, perfectionism, obsessive thoughts, and self-doubt. My therapy style is focused on helping my clients gain genuine happiness, more purpose and life fulfillment, confidence, and closer relationships. I hold a modern view of mental health treatment: one that is non-judgmental, warm, humorous, and most importantly, goal directed.

Too often we are expected to travel through life's journey without acknowledging the incredible demands of self-exploration, healing, and discovery. Our world has taught us to believe that if we cannot see hurt, aches, pain, or trauma, then it must not be there. I invite you to challenge this belief and acknowledge that mental health is health, too. Traumas are more often than not invisible, only to be seen when someone is struggling on the outside. It is imperative to pay attention to the obstacles we cannot see.

I recognize the courage it takes to seek professional counseling and consider it an honor to walk with clients through the pain of life’s challenges. I believe that clients are best able to meet the goals of therapy in an environment where they are unconditionally accepted and empathically understood and consider it a sacred privilege to be trusted with my clients' thoughts, feelings, and experiences. For clients who are interested in incorporating faith into treatment, I am trained to integrate Christian spirituality into the healing process.

I think of my work as a way of helping patients make friends with themselves. I believe that we torture ourselves by holding onto memories that are painful. We play endless "tape recordings" in our minds that create anxiety, depression or compulsive behaviors. We repeat destructive patterns in our relationships which lead to isolation, shame, regret and guilt. Our choices in life become narrow and limited. Keeping unpleasant feelings at bay becomes our priority thus sapping us of energy. With the release of that energy prosperity can develop in all areas of life.

I work in partnership with my clients to create the life they desire. I help clients understand their behaviors and teach techniques on how to change behavior. What I have seen is reduced stress, healthier boundaries, and more enjoyment in life. My goal is to equip you with additional tools to handle what life brings in the next phase of your life. For couples counseling I pull from my Gottman Level I & II Training and Behavior Analysis. When you understand why people behave as they do, and how to effectively communicate your needs, the speed bumps in life smooth out.

Hello! Does it seem overwhelming and maybe a little bit odd to be searching for a therapist? I get it! Please allow me to introduce myself to you. My name is Sonja (rhymes with "lasagna"). I enjoyed working with children and their families for 15 years, and then I transitioned to the medical field, where I was blessed to continue my growth within a variety of settings. My husband and I have one spoiled dog, Bo, a boxer-hound mix, who brings lots of laughs to our home.

My hot take on what feels really tough these days - I think we are all really freaking hard on ourselves. You might find yourself following rules around who you "should be" or what you "should do." You might be finding yourself following diet culture rules (which make you feel like shit about both food and your body), working a job you hate, or feeling like your self-esteem is in the dumps. The good news is that I think that you have all the tools you need to figure out what you truly want (and I can help you find them). You are worthy of living a life that is meaningful to you outside of the rules you were taught.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Tampa?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
