There's something bewildering about watching yourself repeat a pattern you'd give anything to break. You understand it, you've talked about it, but it keeps happening anyway. People I work with are often intelligent, self-aware, and still suffering from depression, anxiety, painful relationship or behavior patterns, or a vague but persistent feeling that life isn't what it could be. That's just the kind of stuck we can work with together—not from a distance, but in the room, in the body, in the moment.
I practice ISTDP, an experiential, present-moment therapy that works with feelings, body sensations, and relational patterns as they arise, rather than focusing on your thoughts about these experiences. Its like talking about a slice of cake vs. eating it. The work is intense but calibrated moment-to-moment: challenging, but not overwhelming.
In addition to being a therapist, I'm also a Zen Buddhist priest, and a mom. Many years of meditation practice—temple residency, dozens of silent retreats, ordination—have shaped my presence as much as my clinical training.
