Most people solve most problems on their own or with help from friends, but that doesn’t always work. Troubles mount up. Upheavals catch you unawares. “Go to” solutions can leave you empty-handed. Even planned changes can be disorienting - new jobs, retirement, new relationships, going off to school, children leaving home. Sometimes people just need help coping, changing bad habits, or thinking through options. Other times people feel hemmed in by circumstances, or find they don’t recognize themselves in the life they lead and want to deepen their sense that the life they are living reflects their own values and choices.
For more than 30 years, I have worked as a psychotherapist for people with a broad range of psychological symptoms and life problems. I have taught in, and served as department chair and director of clinical training in a well-regarded doctoral clinical psychology program, and conducted health services research.
When all you can think about is what you don’t want, it’s hard to learn what you really do want. A mind dominated by life’s pains has trouble making choices, risking intimacy, engaging with life. My job is to listen without judgment, work together to make sense of things, and help you explore what life has to offer.
