My journey into becoming a therapist began well before I was born with the inheritance of generational family mental health issues. As a teenager, I was drawn to art making as a means of processing difficulties I was experiencing and did not have the verbal understanding nor support system to address. I pursued a career in the arts through university and apprenticeships but was not fully satisfied and needed more internal investigation for what connection I was having with art and my psyche. I studied anthropology, took classes in psychology, and was exposed to indigenous healing methods. Eventually, I discovered art therapy.
Non-verbal processing can facilitate a shift when we are feeling stuck by expectations of having a verbal formula for what we are experiencing or inadequate integration of a diagnosis into our lives. Learning tools such as mindfulness or breathing techniques can also foster growth and change the context of the way we relate to ourselves and complexities.
I enjoy listening to client stories and helping people have better personal understanding. I believe in "goodness of fit" regarding the client/therapist relationship, encourage client feedback, and full participation in the therapy process. I utilize humanistic, psychodynamic, solution focused, cognitive behavioral, spiritual, and experiential approaches.
