In my 30 years of practice I've successfully treated the unique concerns that bring men into therapy. These include mid-life and aging issues, career insecurity, burnout, transitions; relationship problems; and the gamut of addictive behaviors (sex, porn, gambling, substances, etc.). Symptoms most often associated with these life problems include depression, anxiety, avoidance, isolation, and sexual dysfunction. Because they aren't comfortable exposing their vulnerabilities men often need encouragement to seek therapy. We all know that therapy is hard work! Through experience, I've learned how to carefully delve beneath typical male-oriented defensive styles by fostering collaboration in identifying traumatic experiences and attachments, eliminating self-sabotaging patterns, and enabling my patients to eventually achieve a more authentic, dynamic, masculine self.
I'm currently forming a ten week group that will begin in May exclusively for men dealing with mid-life (and beyond) issues and challenges that are unique to men. Men's Thursday evening mid-life group
Men often require the safety that exists in a men's only group because there's no competition for female attention, and no fear of being judged by women. This allows for a more comfortable, open, and less defensive group dynamic, where emotional expressiveness is more easily achieved.
