I strive to bring strengths and resiliency to all clients. Being human is hard and my wish is to help all people feel more empowered navigating it. Working with individuals, couples and families, I find myself learning from each. I enjoy the opportunities I am allowed in teaching each person skills and alternative coping mechanisms to deal with their past, present, or future. My only goal is that you acquire from me the skills and tools needed to change your yesterdays and make new tomorrows. If you are ready and willing to trust the process, I promise to guide you along the way.

I work with preteens, teens, adolescents, and parents to navigate the challenging transition of childhood to early adulthood. I believe in the importance of relationship. We aren't ourselves when we feel uncomfortable, so my work centers on establishing a working relationship that fosters connection, collaboration, and mutual understanding. I believe that “you are the expert on you” and work to understand my client’s personal values and life perspective. Once I have a sense of who you are, we will begin to identify behavior patterns and increase awareness to focus on making meaningful changes that are right for you.

I have throughout my career developed and implemented Women's Outpatient Treatment, Trauma-informed treatment, Seeking Safety groups, Better Boundary groups, Co-occurring groups, Smoking Cessation groups, providing assessments for mental health, and ASAM Assessments. This has also required building community liaisons and partners with referrals to treatment facilities that provide inpatient/outpatient services and reporting to third-party referrals such as Corrections, Child Welfare, DMV, and other Mental Health organizations.

I am passionate about coming into the Here and Now with clients and believe in the healing power of being witnessed with presence and loving kindness. Using mindfulness based practices I focus on supporting clients in addressing issues of depression, anxiety, and identity issues. In session I emphasize bringing the client’s attention out of thoughts/stories and into their present moment bodily experience with the understanding that more immediate change can occur this way. I enjoy experiencing the client and counselor relationship as a microcosm of the client’s greater relational life, and an opportunity to do deep healing.

I enjoy working with clients to build on their strengths and gifts to improve their quality of life. My goal as a Tele-Health therapist is to provide a safe and welcoming, non-judgmental, environment to collaboratively identify struggles, traumas, issues, and problems that have been difficult to overcome, then support and help guide you in developing skills that lead to a more fulfilling life. While serving In the U.S. Army, I noticed how a devoted therapist can have an immense impact on a person's recovery. After completing my enlistment, I decided to pursue a career in Mental Health.

You work so hard to become a professional and then Wham, out of nowhere you begin to experience anxiety or a feeling that maybe you don't know what you are doing after all. Your supervisor's communication feels like sandpaper and you get emotional without apparent reason. The work just doesn't feel like what you expected and you just feel out of sorts. You begin to realize you are using substances and some pretty unhealthy behavior just to cope. I mean it was fine in college but now it keeps you from feeling good. You need support from someone that gets it. You just need to get back on track.

It goes without saying these past few years have been an uphill battle. With the stress of a pandemic, the economic hardships facing many, and political divides deepening: it's no wonder anxiety is high. Or depression feels magnified. Or you find yourself falling back into bad habits.  But you don't have to struggle through this time alone. Empathic Counseling can help you cope during this difficult time and empower you to thrive. I work closely with clients across Oregon to help them find freedom from Anxiety, Depression, Addiction, Trauma, or that harsh voice inside you that tells you you're not enough.

Please know that if you send an email to a therapist, check your spam for response. I believe that healing is a collaborative endeavor that requires honest caring without judgment, and I cooperatively assist my clients in clarifying their goals for treatment. Rather than using one approach for all individuals and issues, I draw from a variety of methods to create a tailored approach for each individual and situation. As a therapist, I am warm, open, encouraging, and direct. I consider myself an active therapist, combining experience, education, creativity, and sense of humor with a down-to-earth, realistic approach to counseling.

During this very challenging time of communities chaos, personal and career transitions and uncertainties, we are all seeking comfort, understanding, welcoming connection, and joining something that is both meaningful and personally fulfilling and safe to participate in. We seek others that can identify with our own experiences, our fears, and our perceived solutions. We feel guarded and suspicious, and alone and sometimes forgotten. We blame ourselves for feeling depressed or anxious, grief and heartbroken for our families, our future, and work environments. We want to work harder to feel better and yet, continue to struggle.

How does an intervention work?

An intervention is a planned, structured meeting in which a person’s family or friends voice concerns about the person’s behavior and its consequences; the goal is for the person to accept treatment. In this meeting, the person’s loved ones (often with the guidance of a trained interventionist) share how the person’s behavior has harmed them and the consequences if the person refuses treatment. They collectively ask the person to accept a proposed treatment plan.

How effective are interventions?

There isn’t extensive research on the efficacy of interventions, in part because success is difficult to measure. Individuals often enter addiction treatment after an intervention, for example, but treatment itself may not work, especially if the person only begins due to external pressure from others rather than due to internal motivation to change. However, if all other attempts at helping someone have failed, an intervention may be worth exploring.

What are the limitations of interventions?

While a friend or family member’s intentions are in the right place in wanting to help a loved one through an intervention, there are significant limitations to the approach. The surprising nature of the event can make the person feel ambushed or judged. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed as a result, and relationships may be strained or broken. This can make it difficult for the individual to be receptive to the concerns of their loved ones and the interventionist.

Are there alternatives to interventions?

Rather than confronting a loved one through an intervention, an effective and less pressured approach is to create space for a caring, open, one-on-one conversation. This works best if the loved one asks open-ended questions, listens attentively to the answers, and frames their observations and statements with concern rather than judgment. More than one conversation may be needed, but change can take root over time.
