If all the world is a stage, do you feel like the only one who didn't get a copy of the script? Did you grow up feeling there was something fundamentally different or 'wrong' about you, something that you had to hide from the world? Do you feel you are often misunderstood in social situations, that you have to choose your words very carefully or people will misinterpret them? Do certain sounds, tastes, or textures bother you a lot? Have you had the thought 'either autistic people need to stop being so relatable, or I need to see a therapist'?

I love working with teenagers and young adults. I respect and admire the spirit of adolescents. I appreciate the courage and the struggle that it takes to become an adult in these times. I have a great deal of experience with all of the issues that young adults face: academic stress, transition to college, relationship issues, conflicts with parents, identity issues, sexuality, body image issues, drinking/using drugs to cope, divorce, loss, loneliness, and general moodiness. I also provide support for parents, and enjoy working with couples of all ages.

You may have wondered whether therapy could be helpful to you. I offer a complimentary consultation to discuss any questions you may have. You can talk to me about anything; nothing you tell me will shock or surprise me. I can help you work through your difficulties and also help you become your own therapist by learning how to better deal with challenges that come up in life. I work well with clients struggling with anxiety, OCD, panic, depression, relationship, eating and body image, and addiction issues. Clients often see reduction in symptoms and improved well being early on in therapy.

I realize that the decision to begin therapy is not always an easy one and what happens in therapy can be difficult to put into words. Put simply, therapy is about letting your voice be heard. You can reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in the presence of someone who will listen in a non-judgmental way. My expectations of my clients are simple - that they attend their scheduled sessions and that they are honest. In return, I will be an attentive and emotionally present ally, helping you learn more effective ways to approach daily struggles.

Choosing to enter therapy offers the possibilities of growth, change, and an increased active involvement in one’s life. My approach to therapy is to engage with patients beginning with the interests and concerns that prompt them to enter therapy. We can focus on issues that are immediately present, and also seek an understanding of underlying patterns of behaviors, beliefs, thoughts, and feelings.

Are you experiencing difficulty with life transitions, change in culture, career concerns, and/or relationship issues? Do you wish to find a balance with all your roles and identities? Most of us wear many hats daily which can lead us to feeling overstimulated, anxious, and depressed. Sometimes we have an extensive support system but find ourselves unwilling to share vulnerable thoughts and feelings. If you are experiencing anxiety or feeling discontent as a result of change, this is the place for you. I offer culturally sensitive, holistic, evidenced based therapy to help you face change and improve your overall quality of life.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
