I appreciate you considering me as someone that may stand by you during this difficult time. The focus of my individual clinical work has been with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, identity crises, childhood trauma, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, while tackling a plethora of general life issues. I have also worked with couples and families to resolve interpersonal issues. I am passionate about helping people in systemically oppressed groups like those in LGBTQ+, non-monogamy, and kink communities as well as any others that may find it hard to express parts of themselves. All of you is welcome!

I am a strengths-based, dynamic interpersonal therapist who has been working with the modalities of CPT, CBT, & ACT.
Exploring your feelings and thoughts in a professional setting is a useful way to gain understanding, in life and with yourself. Life can be challenging, and adversities impact us all. From every day stress to relationship issues or difficulties such as trauma recovery, talking is helpful. This processing and reflecting in is catalyst to increase your self-awareness. If we are open to the process, we can learn to self-regulate, increase our coping skills, and find solutions and ways to reframe unproductive thoughts, and focus on strengths and abilities.

People come to counseling because they want something to be different in their lives. Experience has taught me that I must create a safe and supportive setting. And I must be skillful and respectful in order for positive and lasting change to occur. In over thirty years of practice I have seen amazing growth and transformation in the clients with whom I have worked.

My goal in therapy is to help you work through barriers to living your life with direction, vitality, meaning, and connection. Old learnings that once protected us can now limit how we perceive the world, our experience of who we are, and our sense of what is possible. You don't have to continue the struggle alone. I want to help you feel grounded and empowered, discover what you care about, and take practical action... so you're able to live your life with greater freedom and fulfillment.

Self-esteem and anxiety are the primary issues my clients bring to therapy. They have trouble feeling comfortable in their own skin and often avoid themselves, seeking validation and comfort from the outside. I help clients go inward and befriend themselves, allowing them to develop a deep understanding of who they are. This creates the stability people are yearning for. I had to learn this first hand. I used to be very anxious. I was a people pleaser and got my sense of worth from the world around me. I am now my best friend and love spending time with me. I'd love to support you in doing the same.

I have been in the profession of helping people for 36 years. It is my approach to treat the whole person not just the symptoms. In that regard we begin a process that resolves not only the symptoms they present to me, but returns to them the feeling of being alive and in command of their own lives in a fashion that allows them to have healthy relationships, function well in their jobs and work, and have a positive sense of themselves.

I believe crisis is part of living. How each of us survives and potentially grows from our times of life crisis, emotional trauma or injury , will shape who we are and how we approach our life path.Prior to beginning private practice, I spent 35 years as clinical supervisor and director of the Alachua County Crisis Center, I counseled individuals, couples and families as they struggled on their life journeys... Dealing with relationship issues, loss of loved ones, facing traumatic pasts and uncertain futures have often led to feelings of despair, anxiety , hopelessness ,depression and a sense of isolation and disconnection.

My international education and lived experiences have informed my approach to therapy that centers your personal and cultural values. I have expertise and a passion for helping those who feel held back from living the life you want because your anxious thoughts have too much power or take up too much time. Sometimes these thoughts may be so obsessive yet difficult to share with anyone because they don't align with who you are - the very fact that they cross your mind can feel scary, weird, or embarrassing. I will help you confront and overcome them while using humor and being real with you in the process.

At Florida Acupuncture and Counseling, our goal is to provide exceptional quality care for each individual. The physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of the body are all interrelated. Each person has a different story formed from the unique events throughout our lives that shape us, often throwing our bodies off balance. At Florida Acupuncture and Counseling we strive to formulate a treatment plan specific to you in order to aid you in your journey back into balance by helping restore body, mind, and spirit. We desire to be set apart, giving light to everyone who comes through our door; to create a healing environment where patients do not feel like they're just another name on a schedule, but a place where patients will be filled with peace and joy.

Are you motivated to understand yourself better, grow in perspective and insight about your world and circumstances, and translate this learning into meaningful action? If so, we may be a good match! I believe truly effective therapy happens when we are ready to look deeply and critically at our current situation, ready to really try to make sustainable, practical changes, and able to be humble and self-compassionate in our attempts to flourish. You do not have to know exactly what you want or need, or have all the answers, but being willing to find those together is the key to meaningful therapy.

Deciding to go to therapy isn't an easy decision, but it certainly is a courageous move. Our world often beats us down and tells us that we should be able to deal with struggles on our own. Fortunately, we are made to walk through life's struggles together. I consider it an honor to walk with you and to help you work through challenges that are keeping you from experiencing life the way you deserve. In therapy, I use a positive, strengths based approach to help you reach your goals.

My ideal client is one that is able to do three things. First, my ideal client should be one that is can acknowledge that he/she has an issue/issues that is/are getting in the way of allowing him/her to live a healthy lifestyle. Second, my ideal client is one that is able to take that first step to bringing themselves into therapy. If they have support, that would be even better for that will hopefully increase the chances of long term success. Finally, my ideal client will be one that is not just coming into sessions when they are required, but that they are doing the work outside sessions that is needed to have success.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
