My approach is grounded in human capacity for growth and uses elements of Psychodynamic Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems, and Imago Relationship Therapy.
Alyssa is a relationship therapist who helps individuals & couples reconnect with themselves and each other through healing complex trauma, grief, chronic anxiety & toxic relationship patterns. I help clients slow down from their busy lives that leave little space to breathe or make choices with clarity, often clouded by an anxious street of thoughts or floating numbly with disconnection while over-scheduling to avoid pain. We explore and shift how expectations and circumstances may come at the expense of clarity and fulfillment from a safe foundation of connection that promotes safe communication, growth and healing.

You deserve to feel well; Let's get you there. Our work together is designed to cultivate greater contentment in your life. We all experience challenge, often around our relationships, our work, our health, and caring for our children and loved ones. These experiences can provoke anxiety, fear and uncertainty. Having a safe, nonjudgmental space in which to work through these moments can be profoundly helpful and often facilitate swifter resolution. I am trained in a wide number of modalities including EMDR, IFS (Internal Family Systems) Relational and Psychodynamic psychotherapy, among others.

I integrate a variety of modalities into my work with clients, including taking a strengths-based, client-centered approach, while also blending EMDR therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), CBT techniques, systems theory, psychoeducation, and of course, trauma-informed care.
I have a passion for helping adults, teens, and children heal from trauma. Whether you're struggling with a complex trauma history or navigating through a stressful life event, I work alongside my clients to help them navigate challenging experiences, overwhelming emotions, and confusing relationship dynamics (in families or with partners). My clinical focus and passion is working with clients navigating intimate partner violence, family violence, sexual assault, abuse as a child, and other complex traumas. In recent years, I've also developed a specialty in working with parents of children with special needs.

I pull from various modalities, such as psychodynamic and internal family systems.
My clients are deep thinkers and deep feelers. They are often burdened by injustice at large and overwhelmed by their inner world of emotion. If you’ve ever been told that you “overthink” things or you’re “too sensitive,” I want to offer you support and encouragement. There’s nothing wrong with being empathic and attuned to the suffering around you. It may be challenging, but it is a strength.

I utilize an integrative approach that incorporates mindfulness based stress reduction, and I am trained in AEDP and IFS.
I work with folks experiencing anxiety and other challenges in relationships. Do you find yourself returning to familiar but detrimental ways of dealing with certain life challenges? Are you in a good relationship that’s triggering a lot of discomfort, making it hard to show up for your partner in ways that you like? If you have outgrown but still struggle with perfectionism, minimizing your needs, overachieving, trying to maintain control or isolating, If you want to feel less anxious, step out of the caretaker role, and have healthy relationships with yourself and others, I understand and can help you get there.

I specialize in the treatment of PTSD, anxiety and depression, and am certified in EMDR, and am trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Frequently, people who have experienced trauma develop extraordinary survival skills. Often the strategies that were critical for survival when you were a child, thwart the ability to develop satisfying work, family and/or romantic relationships in adulthood. Psychotherapy provides an opportunity to transcend patterns that are holding you back from achieving your goals, and realizing your potential. This often includes addressing family, career, and relationship issues within the treatment as well as recognizing thinking and/or behavior which may be harmful or holding you back.

In our work together, I'll use several modalities tailored specifically to you and your needs, drawing on techniques from ACT, DBT, IFS, and somatics.
It's too easy for daily life and work to feel like prisons we just have to endure, rather than gifts to be cherished. Life can throw some tough challenges our way, and as a result, we can end up feeling disconnected from who we are and what truly matters. My mission to help you find a life that is meaningful, whole, and free - by connecting you back to your authentic self and life in the present.

I approach therapy from anti-oppressive, feminist, relational-cultural, and internal family systems lenses (can share more about what this looks like in a free consultation).
Emotional distress is too often pathologized when it's a reasonable response to the oppressive systems in which we live. Instead of trying to "fix" you or help you not feel any difficult emotions, I believe that all feelings have information, and we have the power to find out what that information is and choose what to do with it. I would aim to support you in strengthening your capacity to feel difficult feelings, to treat all parts of you with curiosity and compassion, and to determine what information your feelings are holding so that you can feel more connected to yourself and make choices that align with your values.

I combine my background as a licensed clinical social worker with psychodynamic psychotherapy, Buddhist philosophy, body psychotherapy Core Energetics, Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, CBT and AEDP work (which works with undoing aloneness).
The decision to start therapy is personal and courageous and not always easy. Everyone goes through times when they feel more stressed out, angry, anxious or depressed. It is easier for people to explore their lives and make transformations when they are working with a therapist that they feel comfortable with and trust. My intention is to help you identify the goals you want to work on and to help you understand what is getting in the way of achieving them. I ultimately want to give you a new perspective and look at your underlying belief systems and the repetitive patterns that have been keeping you stuck.

Couples and individuals seeking therapy deserve tremendous respect. In my work with relationships, I offer Emotion Focus Therapy (EFT) to help both partners to get unstuck from the repetitive patterns of emotional disconnect, that lead to fights or deadening silence. As a couples' therapist with an advanced training in Gottman therapy, I integrate it in my work when needed. My approach to individual treatment is Internal Family Systems (IFS) where you get to know your inner world, become more present, less reactive, and more capable of self-healing. I work both with monogamous and consensual non-monogamous relationships.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
