I'm a nature-based therapist who works with those struggling with attachment wounds, grief, identity & spiritual emergencies/distress, sexuality, PTSD, self-worth, depression, anxiety, and difficult life transitions. I am dedicated to anti-oppression work both personally & professionally. I hold a social justice lens in my work and don't shy away from acknowledging the profound psycho-spiritual impacts that the dominant culture has had on all of us, especially those who have been marginalized. I believe that mindfully addressing your contextual ecosystem is essential in truly getting to the root of why you're suffering.

I believe that all of us want to live meaningful lives, connected to loved ones and contributing to the world in some way. To do so, we must learn to fully accept ourselves, connect with others in healthy ways, and develop our unique gifts. My intention as a therapist is to create a warm and safe space for you to do the brave work of addressing past wounds, updating stories that keep you small, and helping you grow a sense of inner peace and outer resilience. If you are ready for real change in your life and are tired of being stuck in the same routine, same fears, or same unhelpful thought patterns, then we will likely work well together. Many of the clients who see me for therapy have experienced excessive worry and hyper-vigilance, hopelessness, suffered from the aftereffects of a traumatic event, or have had difficulty connecting in relationships with others. I love working with women and men who are currently experiencing the wild changes and challenges of parenthood, particularly helping women find their selfhood during the pre and postpartum journey.

Each one of us is capable of living a life of authenticity, connection, meaning, and joy. Yet so much can get in the way. Early on, we're taught to believe that something is wrong with us - we're the wrong size, the wrong gender/sexuality/race, have the wrong talents/goals. We're taught to strive for a limited vision of success. On top of these cultural pressures, many of us experience trauma such as emotional/physical abuse. Is it any wonder that so many people suffer from unhappiness, depression, anxiety, self-criticism, and disempowerment?

I work primary from an Internal Family Systems approach, as well as Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.
I believe in forming a strong and trusting relationship with my clients. I am known for my warmth, patience, curiosity, creativity and energy. I work successfully with individuals who feel stuck; that something is blocking them from getting to where they want to be. They may have lost their motivation, self-confidence, feel sad or fearful, have difficulties in relationships, or are haunted by things that have happened to them. I am attentive to how each individual takes in information and engage that learning style in sessions. My ultimate goal is to help others be more aware of who they are.

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
