My approach as a relational therapist and psychoanalyst goes beyond coping skills or surface attachment styles. I examine my reactions to what you bring to find non-generic ways to accompany you, hold your experience across time and help you expand inner capacities and perspective.
It is almost a trope that therapy is about looking to the past to understand the present. In fact, it might be more helpful to say that we can make use of what is happening in the present to make sense of the past. I consider therapy to be working when one becomes able to make new connections amongst already existing experiences.
I often work with people whose prior experience was symptom-oriented and/or brief but who found themselves wondering if there might be more. Maybe they did not feel understood but were uncertain if bringing it up was part of how their therapist worked. Many of my clients are in the helping/mh professions, creative fields and/or navigating academic settings.
