Over the past thirty years, I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults with diverse mental health issues including, depression, anxiety, Post-concussive syndrome, ADHD, learning disabilities, ASD, addiction, grief, and trauma. Recognizing that individuals experience stress in many aspects of their life and struggle with life's transitions, I work with children and adolescents transitioning through the stages of development and with adults facing marital, parenting, custody and relationship issues. I conduct psychological and neuropsychological testing to evaluate for mental health, academic, and neurological issues.

With 26 years' of experience in the mental health field as a counselor and psychotherapist, I have maintained a well-established practice in Bergen County for 20 years. My practice provides individual, group and family counseling and psychotherapy in addition to workshops and lectures. I have worked in a variety of community and private agencies which has provided me experience with diverse populations and services. Areas of experience include: depression, anxiety, women's issues, trauma, life transition, adolescent issues, family issues, addiction, gifted population and more.

Therapy is about telling the truth. Listening for it, discovering it, and acknowledging it with the help of someone who makes that possible through trust. It's also about growth beyond difficult times, with guidance and encouragement. Over the last 25 years, mental health studies reveal that the most significant factor in successful outcomes is the alliance between the therapist and client. Often the practitioner's credentials, methodology, and theoretical framework are secondary. I specialize in work with couples, individuals and adolescents. My credentials include the 6-year psychotherapy privilege, the highest licensing of my profession in New York State.

During last 15 years of professional training and experience, I have developed effective strategies which have helped families get through difficult times. My area of specialty is family therapy and I strive to help children and parents be successful. My therapeutic approach employs each family's unique qualities and strengths. With short term goals, I often use Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which is structured and ensures the progress is easy to track and the time spent in therapy is productive.

I perform Court Ordered Services to include Child Custody Evaluations, Parenting Time Plans, Reunification Therapy, and Mental Health Assessments.

For more than 30 years I've helped hundreds of couples and individuals build stronger and healthier relationships. As a licensed couples therapist and certified sex therapist I use a variety of proven techniques to help people solve conflicts, improve communication and ignite a spark in their sex lives. Together, we'll work to decrease anger, blame and defensiveness, replacing them with assertiveness, compassion and mindfulness. I work with diverse couples.

I work from an empathic perspective which means I want to come to know you in a non-judgmental way at a pace that is comfortable to you. I understand how cognitive and emotional difficulties can impact not just school/work functioning but also personal relationships and family life. I appreciate that parents and families can play an important role in treatment and include them when appropriate. I work with a variety of emotional and neurological issues with the ultimate goal of helping my clients get the most they can from their lives.

The great majority of my clients suffer from anxiety and depression often triggered by conflicts in families, school, jobs, with authority figures, and peers. I enable my clients unlock their strengths and skill sets to unstick themselves, address their barriers and conflicts, and find solutions. My client base includes teachers, students, law enforcement officers, parents, professionals, and financial advisers. Through my leadership experience in crises and trauma events (including 9/11), I have developed a coping model presented in my book, Resiliency. I use this model to help people to "bounce back" and restore high-level functioning. My approaches are short-term and solution-based.

At Social Butterfly Counseling, we work with children, families and adults. When working with children and families, we partner with guidance counselors, teachers and administrators to help families navigate complicated school systems and access the resources they need. We provide children with tools to handle the expectations and issues they encounter in school and in relationships. We guide couples in exploring effective ways to co-parent and communicate with each other and their children.
