Dealing with addiction can be an overwhelming experience that is filled with starts and stops and can often leave you hopeless and uncertain about the future. In many ways, addiction is like a bad relationship; the longer you remain in it, the worse it gets. Change is possible, but you do not need to go it alone. I will provide a therapeutic space that will meet you where you are and help you to discover the possibility of a better future.

Currently not accepting in person appointment/ clients. I specialize in the stuff most people prefer to sweep under the rug; complex trauma, addiction, and unique mental health challenges. You know, the things that, if left unchecked, turn you into a flaming dumpster fire of a person. I also specialize in unique populations like polyamory and neurodivergent. Together, we’ll work through the darkness and find a way to make life suck a little less. Or, who knows, maybe even a lot less. Life’s chaotic, but we can still make progress while acknowledging that, sometimes, it’s a bit of a dumpster fire.

I began my career working with individuals in recovery from substance use disorders, where I came to understand that substance use is often a response to deeper emotional pain rather than the core issue itself.
In our work together, we gently begin to untangle these patterns, strengthen boundaries, rebuild self-trust, and reconnect you with your own voice and sense of worth. I draw from a range of evidence-based approaches, including EMDR (certified EMDR therapist), CBT, mindfulness, addiction-informed care. Heal the core negative beliefs that often drive emotions.

At times people find themselves wondering how they got where they are, thinking about now vs then. Experiences can lead to not feeling like yourself and being uncertain of where you're headed. Entering new phases of life can present uncharted struggles, overwhelming unease, and major disruptions to balance and peace, making the path forward feel confusing and unsure. Maybe the overwhelm has gotten the better of you and you are hoping to find a place to land that is safe, met with warmth and honesty, and is practical in nature. If so, you've landed in the right spot.

Counseling is always challenging work, and my path has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to help people who are struggling with particularly dark spaces. From addictions, to pornography, to domestic violence, to anger issues, to couples at the breaking point, I am ready and prepared to aid in healing, regardless of the degree of pain or dysfunction. If you’ve never talked with a counselor, you might be anxious. I understand that counseling is never easy. But then, neither is life. And there’s no reason to be ashamed or embarrassed about asking for help. In fact, knowing you need help is a sign of courage and character.

I connect best with other queer and neurodiverse folks who've tried the “fitting in” and are more interested in a sense of belonging. Maybe you're new to mental health care, or maybe you've been around a time or two (or more!)- I enjoy working with individuals who've identified as an "intellectualizer" or "over-thinker," and know that "being self-aware" only goes so far.

I have also worked with a lot of clients who deal with substance use.
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) based in Indiana. I received my master's degree from Purdue. I also have a certificate in art therapy and addiction counseling. I am TFCBT-trained as well. I have been working in the field for 7 years, mainly with clients struggling with depression, anxiety, and addiction. I love hearing people's stories and helping them find positives to make their situation better. I have had success using CBT for many different clients. I think it's great to teach how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors can connect and to watch clients learn how to make those connections.

I’m Andy Saunders, a therapist who shows up as a real person first. I became a therapist because I’ve lived through many of the same struggles my clients face—anxiety, identity confusion, the weight of trauma, addiction, and years of not feeling at home in my own skin. I know what it’s like to question your worth, to hide parts of yourself, and to feel lost in your own story. My own journey through recovery, mental health treatment, and embracing my sexuality shaped the way I sit with people: with honesty, compassion, and absolutely no judgment.

I provide virtual psychotherapy for adults who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or caught in patterns they can’t seem to shift on their own—especially during transitions that disrupt identity, confidence, or professional momentum. Many of my clients are thoughtful and self-aware. You’ve read the books, listened to the podcasts, and done the reflection—but something still isn’t clicking. You may understand your patterns intellectually, yet find yourself repeating them in ways that feel frustrating or discouraging.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
