Dr. Viktor E. Frankl's words, "In some ways suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds a meaning, such as the meaning of a sacrifice." embodies much of how I approach each of my clients: to help each of them find meaning and purpose through that which brings them to my office. Whether I am counseling a struggling married couple, an adolescent dealing with depression , or someone experiencing chronic mental illness, I feel that each individual can become whole if they are able to embrace, accept and transform their suffering.

Working with depression , anxiety, and gender identity issues are of special interest to me.
Helping people to achieve their full potential is my passion. In my nearly 20 years in the social work field, I’ve worked with a broad range of clients – from 5 year old children facing traumatic abuse to 100 year old Sisters suffering from dementia. I’ve helped homeless teen parents, boys and girls, men and women, people who weren’t sure who they were and people fighting to be recognized for who they are.

When life doesn't go as planned, we can react with grief, sadness, guilt, anger and worries. Major events such as diagnosis of chronic disease, divorce, trauma, death of a loved one, can contribute to loss of energy and diminished hope for positive change. Even without such dramatic occurrences, depression and anxiety often co-exist. Therapy is a form of self-care, and can provide active listening and non-judgmental regard. Insight into core values can bring clarity, energy and movement toward goals. Mood can improve, decisions can be made with greater confidence, and hope can be restored.

Depression Therapists
Depressive disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. Depression is not a passing blue mood, which almost everyone experiences from time to time, but a complex mind/body illness that interferes with everyday functioning. It not only darkens one's outlook, it is commonly marked by sleep problems and changes in energy levels and appetite. It alters the structure and function of nerve cells so that it disrupts the way the brain processes information and interprets experience.

Despite feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, depression is a treatable condition. It can be treated with psychotherapy by depression therapists in South Bend. As with many illnesses, the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it can be and the greater the likelihood that recurrence can be prevented.

Psychotherapy addresses the thinking patterns that precipitate depression, and studies show that it prevents recurrence. Drug therapy is often helpful in relieving symptoms, such as severe anxiety, so that people can engage in meaningful psychotherapy.
