I have advanced training in Internal Family Systems and Emotionally Focused Therapy.
I am trained to target emotional experiences to activate internal healing and external connection. I assist couples by facilitating an environment that safely moves folks towards security in self and towards one another in vulnerability so that bonding can replace the need for self-preservation. With individuals, I welcome all parts of each person as one establishes security in and expansion of self which helps parts of self recognize: "parts cope, self heals." I view people as "stuck" and not "sick," and therefore I believe just as there is a healer in me, there is a healer in you and in each of us.

Some of the specific approaches that I use are the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), SYMBIS premarital assessments, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Collaborative Problem Solving (for parents and kids) and Brainspotting.
I work with individuals and couples, teens and children with a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues.I know that clients want to see progress even though it may be incremental. Therefore, I provide for a collaborative structure, plan and goals that allow clients to see progress every week. I provide resources, homework, and education to my clients to help them in the process of self-discovery and addressing relationship issues. I help clients to find solutions to solvable problems and develop coping skills to address issues that are harder to solve.

Thank you for taking the first steps to exploring therapy options for yourself or a family member. Are you struggling with depression just going through the motions of life? Has there been an affair that you just can’t seem to recover from? Are you thinking about divorce? Maybe you need help processing the way you grew up-that now interferes with your relationships. Was there a previous trauma that you can’t seem to stop replaying? Or is your anxiety controlling your life and running the show? Is it hard to stand up for yourself? You know there has got to be a better way, but can’t seem to get out of these non-stop negative cycles.

You and your partner can’t seem to stop fighting. It seems like things are going along fine, and then something small happens. You may be on a walk or in the car, and all of a sudden there’s a shift and you’re arguing again. Most of the time, you don’t even know what you’re arguing about! Perhaps there has even been a deep pain of some kind, infidelity or another betrayal or rupture to your bond. You realize you need some help to work through it if you don't want to lose your relationship.

Life can be difficult. A marriage that's just okay. A chronic illness that has stolen the life you thought you would live. A shining star in your sport now succumbing to anxiety and doubt. You don't know who you are anymore and what purpose you have. You want to be able to see the good in life and not dwell on the negative. You want a significant marriage or relationship. You know you have what it takes to be the best in your sport “if only”. You're ready to LIVE and learn how to find purpose in your suffering. You want hope. You want to understand YOU better and in return have more fulfilling relationships.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
