Grief Sherpa and Mental Health Sherpa. I use the "sherpa" metaphor because I serve as a guide and help people navigate the tough mountainous parts of their life journey. I'm a progressive thinker specializing in grief and loss (death/non-death). I also work with many common mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and toxic relationships. I use ACT, Schema Therapy, and
attachment-based
therapies to help people heal from Family of Origin wounds (abandonment, mistrust, defectiveness, shame, perfectionism, enmeshment and boundary issues, emotional deprivation, social undesirability, approval-seeking, etc.).

attachment-based

Relationships are the fabric of our lives, weaving all of our life experiences together. Bonds of every kind can be challenging, and sometimes leave us feeling rejected or afraid. Out of a desire for closeness, we can sometimes cower or lash out (without knowing why). Let us work together to discover how to find (and keep!) healthy relationships.

Life surprises us sometimes… In those moments it is helpful to have someone to come alongside us to provide genuine presence, professionalism and expertise, balanced with compassion, to help through times of transition, trauma or growth. I am passionate about offering encouragement, steps for healing and coping, insight, psychoeducation and interpretation when families are struggling to understand one another. Learning how to navigate life’s courses with sensitivity, kindness and realistic perspective can be more easily undertaken in a therapeutic forum that is accepting and direct. Office, teletherapy, walk/talk or home based.

Do you feel like you can't keep doing this much longer? Your mental health doesn't have to come last. Sacrificing yourself for others can be a very admirable trait. But you don't have to burn yourself out to keep others warm.

To achieve this, we will work together to identify personal strengths, build upon these strengths, and learn skills to enhance holistic well-being. Do others tell you you're too sensitive? Do you expect yourself to be perfect? Do you use substances or engage in compulsive behaviors to make yourself feel better? So many of us were raised in homes where we were not given the nurturance, guidance, or protection we needed as children. Even if there was no physical or sexual abuse, we may have been raised in ways that did not create the solid, secure foundations we needed to become confident, joyful adults. Please hear me: There is nothing wrong with you. You are resilient and developed amazing, creative ways to survive.

My clients are typically adoptees and/or their adoptive or birth families. I also see women who are struggling with burnout. Adoption is a life-long process that can create many challenges for adoptees. I “get it” on a level most therapists can’t because as an adoptee myself, I’ve also experienced those losses and the questions that come with them. I am in reunion and have been since I was 18. This has been a largely positive experience but has had emotional ups and downs through the years.

I work with children and adults from all over the world, and use an integrative approach to counseling, as I don't believe that one-size-fits-all in therapy. I am passionate about helping expat adults and third culture kids (TCK's) as they live in new cultures and navigate all that entails. I also enjoy working with international clients, specifically Arab clients, and have a good understanding of the culture and traditions. I am EMDR Trained (Level 2), trauma informed, adoption informed/attachment focused, and use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT & REBT), mindfulness, self-compassion, person-centered, and psychodynamic approaches.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
