Most people who begin counseling are confronted with loss of some kind, whether it stems from serious marital difficulties, divorce, death or a life transition such as becoming parents, or helping young adults leave home.
Challenges in relationships, whether with spouses, partners, or with a parent and their children, help determine one's sense of security and well being at home. Work related demands and other difficulties can be additional stresses. It's vitally important that you, a potential client, and I develop rapport which will help us effectively address your concerns. I enjoy people and hope to do my best in responding to you as we build on what's already working well in your life at this time.

My first consultation (30 minutes) is free so together we may decide what would be most helpful for you, to assess your needs, and determine what is best. For many lifestyle coaching or consulting is often best for those who want to improve life or problem solve as opposed to treatment for a diagnosable condition; while others may benefit more from counseling for concerns with anxiety, grief , or depression. Having spent many years in teaching and practice in metro Lou, I may also recommend colleagues who may be more helpful.

I have more than 15 years experience providing individual and family therapy for grief and loss , health concerns, anxiety, depression, school/academic difficulties, and parenting concerns.
Whether you or your family are facing a challenge or are tired of old patterns that never seem to get better, therapy can be a big step toward being the person you want to be with the ability to enact change for yourself or your family. I view therapy as a two-way street in which I use evidence-based strategies from ACT, CBT, narrative, EMDR, DBT, to help you reach your goals. Sessions include a balance of creating space for insights and engaging in targeted steps to reduce distress and reach your goals.

Anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and trauma are just a few of the areas of focus in my practice. It is my belief that no individual should face mental health challenges alone. Trained therapists can help clients overcome the challenges that seem insurmountable and may decrease their ability to enjoy life, set and achieve goals, and look forward to a brighter future.

My areas of greatest expertise include relationships, identity development, family-of-origin, shame, and grief .
I believe that we all have needs that drive our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The need to connect, to be seen, to be heard, to succeed, to feel alive... Sometimes we are successful in getting our needs met, sometimes we are not. Often, we think there is only one way to be. We see and interpret our experiences with the patterns we establish in our early years. These ways of interacting in the world aren't always as effective or helpful as they may have been when we were young. Fortunately, we can change.

There is no such thing as an ideal client. That is too boring. The way I do therapy is relaxed. I am not your average therapist, and I am not going to be like, "How does that make you feel?" but I am going to say, "What up! How are we doing today?" I never stop learning, and when you have me as a therapist, you will see that you will fall back in love with learning. Overall, I am just honored you allowed me to help you! Also, the best way to reach me is to Email over calling due to normally being in session, and I want to respond to you as quickly as possible!

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
