Addiction is an insidious disease, one that takes over a person's life like a toxic friend, leading one to believe relief will be at the next turn, only to find misery and heartache. It controls a person's thought-life, holds the soul hostage, destroys the ability to feel simple emotions, and obliterates families. It can be difficult to reach out due to the shame that has permeated one's beliefs about themselves, and finding someone who understands the depth of this pain and shame can be daunting. But there is HOPE.

‘If only I would have… I shouldn’t have… I should have known … Why wasn’t I more careful? How am I going to get through this?’ Having an emotional response to a serious experience like an accident, rape, or natural disaster is normal. Nevertheless, the everyday demands of life can be just as exhausting. Your boss has been pressuring you to work longer hours because of being short staffed. You feel guilty for working and not being able to spend time with your children, partner, other family and friends. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, with a focus on your personal self-care, may be complicated.

With over 20 years in the mental health field, I am passionate about working together to manage struggles with formulating effective coping skills, reshaping patterns that have not been healthy or helpful, processing thru a life change or event that has left you feeling stuck and confused, and assisting with sorting thru difficult feelings and emotions. I believe that there is no better time than the present and that every moment is a gift. We are not defined by one moment in our lives. Sometimes, often due to difficult events and challenges, we lose sight of our strengths and our places of empowerment.

Your once bubbly and talkative teen is now spending all of their time in their room, withdrawing from loved ones and feeling alone with increasing stress. You feel like you haven't been able to connect with them, and wonder what's happening in their lives. You have noticed they are more distant, sad, or angry but aren't sure why, and when you try to help you feel like it makes everything worse. The things that you used to talk about and enjoy together don't interest them anymore. You are starting to feel like you are losing your son or daughter.

I coach women (and sometimes men) to value themselves as much as they value others. My clients have had the following characteristics. See if any of these describe you. They want to be liked by everyone. They become anxious when others are angry with them. They avoid conflict at any cost. They judge themselves as never good enough. They are afraid to express differing points of view. They value the opinions others hold of them, more than they value their own self-approval.

Are you feeling unfulfilled, stressed, or hopeless? Do you desire to find purpose, direction, or simply understand yourself better? Many of our feelings and thoughts are outside of our awareness yet continue to influence our everyday choices. Left unattended, these feelings and thoughts can come out in unhealthy ways – often resulting in depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and/or low self-esteem to name a few. As a result, we can feel powerless to change our current circumstances and end up self-sabotaging what we want out of life.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
