Using psycho-education about trauma, your nervous system, EMDR and somatic approaches; I help you understand the ways your trauma has impacted you, how some of your symptoms are your body's way of protecting you and how to heal and find joy.
Have you experienced childhood trauma that is currently impacting the way you show up in your relationships or as a parent/significant other? Do you find yourself trapped in negative patterns or communication cycles that push you further away from the authentic connection you so deeply desire? Do you want to learn how to heal from the trauma you've experienced and not pass it on? I believe with a deep knowing that we can heal from the wounds of our past and even develop authentic genuine attachments. I lean on the transformational power of relationship and a mind/body approach to help you heal and find joy again.

Through Internal Family Systems, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, Emotionally Focused Therapy, attachment based and somatic approaches, I work systemically with individuals, couples and families to find individual and relational healing.
“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.” Fred Rogers sums up very well the first steps of healing - to begin to share what is happening in a compassionate space. I am passionate about supporting people in facing the difficulties and complexities of life with courage.

Tapping deep into the roots of my training and experience as a depth psychotherapist, trauma specialist, meditation practitioner and mentor, and transformational coach, we work with a powerful mix of leading edge therapies like EMDR, Depth Hypnosis, somatic -based modalities and energy medicine.
How long have you been hearing the call to a different way of being with yourself and the world? It might just be the quiet whispering of your heart urging you to something more. Or perhaps the whole universe is shouting that something has got to change, you can’t keep living like this. Avoiding our fear of change can keep us stuck. But your capacity to heal is only limited by your beliefs about what is possible. Genuinely transformational work is ultimately a mix of intentional effort and surprising playfulness. It’s about engaging your inner life in new and creative ways in the safe space of a trusted relationship.

My name is Mercedes Carey, and I'm a licensed social worker. I'm interested in assisting people in discovering new ways to live a lifestyle that promotes healing on a mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual level. I use somatic approaches, such as mindfulness and movement, to treat the mind and body together. As a queer masculine-presenting woman of color, I know what it’s like to belong to multiple marginalized identities and navigate spaces where your entire self is not acknowledged or welcomed. I am deeply committed to providing a safe therapeutic environment that recognizes and honors individuals as a whole person.

My treatment choices reflect this - I am a certified Brainspotting therapist and in the process of receiving my Somatic Experiencing Practitioner certification.
For the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and Empath, the world can be an overwhelming place. These individuals are “super sensing” - their central nervous systems process sensory and energetic information more deeply than the average person. Years of taking in this level of input without awareness and compassion can lead to symptoms of anxiety, depression, patterns of codependency, and unresolved trauma. Your heightened capacity to absorb information does not have to hinder your personal growth & well-being. I specialize in partnering with HSP’s & Empaths as they process traumatic experiences and create positive change in their lives.

My somatic approaches rely on movement, sensations and breath to gain present moment awareness and new insights into personal patterns with the potential of generating change and choice in your life.
I support people who want to explore social isolation and confusion due to current social issues, body image and gender, relational wounding, disconnect, life transitions, aging, stress and trauma. I am also here for adult immigrants to the US to guide them through the challenging transitions they encounter and to explore their sociocultural identities within the present context of their life and their culture of origin. I also work with people who experience symptoms medically otherwise unexplained (brain fog, fatigue) that build on our unique neurophysiological patterns of reaction to stress.

Together, we untangle the complicated parts of your story using methods such as EMDR, somatic experiences, and narrative therapy.
Do you find yourself emotionally stuck, no matter what you do? You may be fed up with dealing with the impact of trauma, feeling exhausted from managing anxiety, or stuck under the weight of depression. You might not even remember a time when things didn't feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you're ready for some relief. You're ready to be in control of your life. You're ready to be free from the burden you've been carrying. Most of all, you're ready to move forward with the plans you've always had for your life.

I am a Certified EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapist as well as SEP ( Somatic Experiencing Practitioner).
Sometimes we feel sad, lonely, anxious, scared, worried, angry or maybe even unsure exactly how we feel, but something feels off. Sometimes when we are really upset we start to feel physical symptoms in our bodies. Sometimes we can feel very irritable or even have outbursts of anger. Sometimes we just can’t stop thinking about something that happened and other times we don’t want to think about it at all. Sometimes we notice ourselves becoming disconnected from others or just not doing what we used to enjoy doing. Sometimes we can’t sleep even if we really want to and feel tired.

Alongside traditional talk therapy, I work from a humanistic and somatic framework that explores the mind-body connection as it relates to your hopes for reconnecting with your truest nature.
I believe in our innate capacity to grow and heal. Sometimes we need a little help along the way. I support that process with compassion, acceptance, and respect. I am most passionate about working with those struggling with relational or complex trauma, attachment issues, self-worth, shame, addictions, and parenting.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
