My somatic approaches rely on movement, sensations and breath to gain present moment awareness and new insights into personal patterns with the potential of generating change and choice integration in your life.
I work with people who want to explore social isolation and confusion due to current social issues, body image and gender, relational wounding, disconnect, life transitions, aging, stress and trauma; people who experience symptoms medically otherwise unexplained (brain fog, fatigue) that build on unique neurophysiological patterns of reaction to stress; and also adult immigrants to the US to guide them through the challenging transitions they encounter and to explore their sociocultural identities within the present context of their life and their culture of origin.

This may include belief work, art, writing, somatic work, psychodrama, and hypnotherapy.
My clients often are aware that something in their current lives is no longer serving them, want to understand how that came to be, and align themselves with the vision they have for their future. This often starts by noticing repeating patterns of behavior in themselves, or those they attract, and becoming curious about the reason why. They may also find that they experience certain physical and emotional responses (anger, anxiety, people pleasing etc.) and know that their body is trying to tell them something needs to shift.

My name is Mercedes Carey, and I'm a licensed social worker. I'm interested in assisting people in discovering new ways to live a lifestyle that promotes healing on a mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual level. I use somatic approaches, such as mindfulness and movement, to treat the mind and body together. As a queer masculine-presenting woman of color, I know what it’s like to belong to multiple marginalized identities and navigate spaces where your entire self is not acknowledged or welcomed. I am deeply committed to providing a safe therapeutic environment that recognizes and honors individuals as a whole person.

My body-based treatment choices reflect this - I am an SEP, meaning I have my certificate in Somatic Experiencing and I am a certified Brainspotting therapist.
For the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and Empath, the world can be an overwhelming place. These individuals are “super sensing” - their central nervous systems process sensory and energetic information more deeply than the average person. Years of taking in this level of input without awareness and compassion can lead to symptoms of anxiety, depression, patterns of codependency, and unresolved trauma. Your heightened capacity to absorb information does not have to hinder your personal growth & well-being. I specialize in partnering with HSP’s & Empaths as they process traumatic experiences and create positive change in their lives.

But your capacity to heal is only limited by your beliefs about what is possible. Genuinely transformational work is ultimately a mix of intentional effort and surprising playfulness. It’s about engaging your inner life in new and creative ways in the safe space of a trusted relationship.

I'm a Certified Brainspotting Practitioner, and I use Internal Family Systems and Somatic Experiencing to help you find calm.
You feel lonely, empty, misunderstood and like you don't belong anywhere. Your family was chaotic and unsafe growing up, and you believe as an adult that your parents don't know the real you. You long to be seen and known, but you feel that you're too much for most people, so you keep your feelings to yourself. You over-function in relationships, and you question why you can't form more genuine connections, which creates resentment and shame. Your mind spins in anxiety, and you're tired of feeling depressed and hopeless. Your usual ways of coping are no longer working, and you long for a sense of ease in your life and relationships.

I work from a somatic and humanistic framework that explores the mind-body connection as it relates to your hopes for reconnecting with your truest nature.
I believe each individual's inborn capacity to grow and heal. When we feel stuck, we may need some support along the way to connect to our own inner healer. My aim is to nurture that process with spacious curiosity and compassion. I am most passionate about working with adults struggling with relational or complex trauma, attachment issues, self-worth, and parenting challenges. Deep connection to nature, to oneself, and to others is a large part of my personal and professional philosophies. To that end, I offer walking therapy sessions for those who prefer to be outside in nature to explore their inner awareness.

Somatic Therapists
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.
What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
