Self Esteem Therapists in Indianapolis, IN
Fostering self-awareness and self-esteem is at the basis of every session.
My favorite part about this career is that I get to witness people grow and unlock new possibilities for themselves. It's truly incredible to see something "click" for a client. A person who feels stuck in something and feels ready to face it will find a co-pilot in me as a therapist. I see each client as the expert and myself as a guide/partner for the journey, offering reassurance or gentle challenges, where needed. I truly believe we are constantly in a state of becoming the best version of ourselves and sometimes a client just needs help sorting out who they want to be from who they think they should be.

You have been meaning to start therapy for a while, but the process is intimidating. OR…
You've struggled to find a clinician who gets you.
You feel lonely and empty.
You are wrestling with understanding yourself and your identity.
Even when things seem to be going well, it feels like something is missing.
If this sounds like you, we'd probably be a good fit.
Rebecca at Grounded Counseling (that's me!) will help you with validation, practical suggestions, and once trust is established, deeper exploratory work. I will laugh at your jokes (if they're funny) and maybe make some (no guarantees they'll be funny).

I work with patients (individuals, romantic relationships of all kinds, families, and groups) who struggle with crisis and long-standing emotional distress. Specifically, I address trauma, dissociative disorders, depression, anxiety, psychosis, and other types of suffering from a primarily systemic, relational, self-psychological psychoanalytic lens.
Clients who benefit most from their work with me are motivated to come to understand the conscious and unconscious dynamics that keep them from living and relating in the way they most long to. I see clients at least once per week.

I’m a nature-inspired therapist who believes that healing doesn’t happen in straight lines. It happens in spirals, returning, relearning, and growing deeper each time. I work with folks who are looking for a holistic approach and a compassionate place to process their experiences. I have a particular passion for supporting teens and young adults as they navigate identity, relationships, anxiety, stress, and life transitions, though I enjoy working with clients across all ages, including children. I strive to embody both cultural humility and multiculturalism, creating a safe space that supports BIPOC, LGBTQIA+.

My approach blends insight with practical skills to improve self-esteem, emotional regulation, body acceptance, and communication.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to keep everything together - work, school, relationships, and family responsibilities - while quietly struggling with anxiety and self-doubt? Life transitions, grief, trauma, complicated family dynamics, body image struggles or binge eating, and hormonal shifts can leave us feeling stuck. Social justice concerns and national and global events add another layer of stress. Therapy is your space to slow things down, make sense of what’s happening, and move forward with more calm and confidence.

Sometimes, it’s not “just stress”—it’s your nervous system still reacting to things that happened long ago.
You may look like you’re holding it all together, but inside, you feel anxious, shut down, or like you’re constantly bracing for something to go wrong. That’s not a personal flaw—it’s your body protecting you in the only way it knows how.

I enjoy working with individuals who experience difficulty with stress, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and LGBTQIA+ concerns.
My name is Mercedes Carey, and I'm a licensed social worker. I'm interested in assisting people in discovering new ways to live a lifestyle that promotes healing on a mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual level. I use somatic approaches, such as mindfulness and movement, to treat the mind and body together. As a queer masculine-presenting woman of color, I know what it’s like to belong to multiple marginalized identities and navigate spaces where your entire self is not acknowledged or welcomed. I am deeply committed to providing a safe therapeutic environment that recognizes and honors individuals as a whole person.

My ideal clients are high-functioning adults and couples who carry a lot quietly. They are responsible, capable, and often the ones others depend on, yet internally they feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or emotionally exhausted. They want healthier relationships, better communication, and a stronger connection to themselves. Their goal is to feel more grounded, understood, and secure as they learn to honor their needs without abandoning themselves.

Self Esteem Therapists
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
