I see adults for individual psychotherapy and also provide psychological testing for children, adolescents, and adults. I work from the psychoanalytic tradition, where I emphasize the role of a patient's early attachments in the development of his/her sense of self and others. I appreciate the importance of the patient-therapist relationship and understand that trust is a necessary part of the treatment process, which includes maintaining a confidential and safe place where each patient is able to explore and work through the presenting concerns.

I want to work with you if you’re facing long-standing personality issues or relationship struggles growing out of them. Though not a psychoanalyst, I am strongly informed by psychoanalytic theory, particularly object relations and intersubjectivity. I like to work with individuals once or twice a week over periods of at least a year or two, and weekly with couples, focusing on the overlap between emotional issues that arise in the therapy room, in your life outside of therapy, and in your family of origin. I'm interested in concerns growing out of cultural difference, religious commitment, and immigration.

I serve clients who struggle with long term emotional distress or who have crisis issues in their lives. Clients motivated to understand the conscious and unconscious forces and meanings that shape their experience and their relationships are specially suited to the work I do. I work from the perspective of intersubjective psychoanalytic theory and object relations theory. I am an Accredited Practitioner in Mentalization Based Psychotherapy with Personality Disorders through the British Psychoanalytic Council.

The goal of my practice is to provide an environment that is conducive to personal growth by offering you safety, comfort and authenticity. We all need someone to talk to at some point in life, in fact, that is what much of being human is all about - the desire to seek advice and guidance as we experience challenges, be they minor derailments or profound tragedies. However, where you go for advice and who you trust to guide you is key. If you're reading this, you're feeling as if something isn't quite right in your life. Let's change it - together.

We often find ourselves repeating patterns in our thoughts and our ways of relating that keep us stuck and unable to move forward in life, preventing us from fully experiencing all that we would like. Past relationships and early experiences impact our current perceptions of our self, others, and the world. Therapy provides an opportunity to gain insight and understanding, as well as a space to explore and work through these patterns and places in life in the hope of gaining a greater sense of freedom and aliveness.

I work with clients who are ready for change and are eager to honestly examine their lives-- clients who are ready to explore issues which have generated disappointments, resentments, loneliness, pain, anger, or heartache. Life is hard, and at times we all need someone who will see us, hear us, and help us explore who we are and why we do the things we do. My approach is primarily psychodynamic and it is highly influenced by object relations and attachment theory. I believe our work is a collaborative effort. I provide a compassionate, engaging and respectful environment for clients.

There are many reason why you find yourself seeking therapy at this time, however, I imagine a consistent theme may be the desire to begin building the life and relationships you desire. Therapy is one of the few spaces in which insightful, thought-provoking connections can thrive; allowing room for new understanding, fostering growth and healing past wounds. Ultimately, providing the necessary space and time to heal. While I build my practice from many schools of therapeutic technique, I truly believe the relationship between client and therapist is the most important piece of the counseling experience and the healing process.

Do you keep revealing to yourself and your loved ones that you are not the person you want to be? Have you kept yourself so hidden from others that now you have difficulty knowing who you are or what you want? Most likely, you have adapted over the years to challenges, maybe traumas, which have helped you survive. Except, those adaptations aren't serving you anymore, and they are actually making things worse. Perhaps you're afraid it's too late, that too much damage has been done. You believe the REAL YOU is hidden somewhere, you just need support finding yourself and living into your highest potential.

I am an Independently Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than 15 years of providing direct, clinical services to individuals and families struggling with emotional, behavioral and psychiatric issues. It has been my experience that fear or avoidance of therapy occurs when people are reluctant to talk about past experiences, which can increase emotional pain. This can leave someone feeling helpless, hopeless and scared of the unknown. Healing and recovery is a process and we will work together to achieve positive change and growth in the areas of life you want to address.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
